Kuhn's chosen to build Hill District supermarket
Thursday, November 13, 2008

Kuhn's Market was selected by the city Urban Redevelopment Authority board today to build a full-service grocery store in the Hill District.

Kuhn's was selected over St. Louis-based Save A Lot, which had proposed a more limited service grocery store.

The URA board gave Kuhn's and co-developer Hill House Economic Development Association three months to finalize financing details for the 40,000-square-foot store, which will include a pharmacy, bakery and cafe. If that happens, it then will convey the land for the store, to be built at Centre Avenue and Heldman Street.

URA board Chairman Yarone Zober said the decision came down to Hill residents' desire for a full-service grocery store. The Hill has been without a store for decades.

"This is their choice. This is what they chose. I'm always going to respect that," said URA board member Tonya Payne, city councilwoman from the Hill.

Kuhn's is hoping to secure $2 million in funding from the state and local foundations to help fund the $8.4 million project.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
