Katie Wright, 10, a fifth-grader at McKnight Elementary School, is the grand prize winner of Radio Disney's BOLT Red Carpet Premiere Sweepstakes. She and her family will travel to Hollywood this week to attend the world premiere of Walt Disney Pictures "Bolt" at the El Capitan Theatre.
Katie, who participates in gymnastics and snow skiing, and her brother, Jack, 7, listen to Radio Disney on AM 540. She recently qualified for this sweepstakes when she won an on-air prize.
Radio Disney will arrange for the family to stay at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood, ride in a limousine and walk the red carpet at the premiere of "Bolt," starring Miley Cyrus and John Travolta, on Monday.
Shaler's 19th Annual Light Up Night will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Shaler Area Middle School on Mount Royal Boulevard, on the library side of the building.
Disc jockey R.D. Summers will be master of ceremonies and bring music to the event. Santa and Mrs. Claus and a cast of characters will be on hand to entertain the children before and after the fireworks display. Refreshments will be served.
Three Mars Area students will compete in the NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick program during the Pittsburgh Steelers football game against the San Diego Chargers at 4:15 p.m. Sunday at Heinz Field.
Sixth-grader Mae Haggerty, fourth-grader Nicole Blythe and third-grader Hunter Fetsko will participate. The students qualified for the competition by placing first at the New Castle Punt, Pass & Kick competition on Oct. 12.
Aquinas Academy in Hampton and St. Joseph High School in Harrison were named to the National Catholic High School Honor Roll, a list of the 50 best Catholic secondary schools in the United States. Aquinas Academy has earned the recognition each of the past four years.
The Honor Roll recognizes schools that excel in academics, Catholic identity and civic education.
Re-enactor Fred Threlfall will talk about the importance of the fur trade in 18th century southwestern Pennsylvania at a meeting tomorrow of the Ross Township Historical Society.
His program will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the municipal building at 1000 Ross Municipal Drive.
Mr. Threlfall will be dressed as an 18th century trader and will use 18th century artifacts as visual aids.
Three schools from the north suburbs will be represented in the WPIAL football playoff semifinal games tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. The three will each put undefeated records on the line when they take the field. Highlands and quarterback Jeff Sinclair will play Blackhawk at North Hills' Martorelli Stadium. Shady Side Academy will take on Aliquippa at Seneca Valley's NexTier Stadium. Avonworth faces Monaca at Moon Area High School.
