Michigan's Manny Harris scored a career-high 30 points and the Wolverines easily beat Michigan Tech, 77-55, in a first-round game of the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament last night at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Michigan (1-0) will face Northeastern in the regional final, while Michigan Tech (0-1) will face IUPUI in the consolation game.
The Wolverines dominated the Division II Huskies from the opening tip. With two minutes left in the first half, Harris had scored 18 points, just four fewer than the entire Michigan Tech team. Michigan led, 42-24, at the intermission and cruised to the easy win.
Georgio Holt led Michigan Tech with 12 points.
Michigan was coming off a 81-55 exhibition win against Saginaw Valley State, which plays in the same conference as Michigan Tech. The Huskies have made the 550-mile trip from Houghton to Ann Arbor three times for exhibition games, but last night was their first regular-season meeting.
Eugene Spates scored 14 points and Matt Janning added 13 in Northeastern's 73-60 victory against IUPUI in the other first-round game in Ann Arbor. ... Pitt defeated Premier Players, 76-65, in its final exhibition game before the regular season begins. Freshman Shawnice Wilson of Westinghouse had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Panthers. Pitt opens the regular season Sunday at the State Farm Tip-Off Classic against 11th-ranked Texas A&M in Baton Rouge, La.
