Movie Review: 'Deuce'
Documentary about sports statistician Lawrence Skurcenski scores as entertainment
Tuesday, November 11, 2008

As the man himself might say, "Not too shabby!"

Joseph and Mark Graziano's documentary, "Deuce," is about a North Braddock resident who, for 53 years, has been a sports statistician, old-school historian who sits courtside with paper and pencil, talker extraordinaire, unofficial cheerleader and ... character.

Joe Bendel from Fox Sports Radio, one of scads of people interviewed, suggests Deuce "transcends what a character is." DeJuan Blair, a Schenley High School grad now playing basketball for Pitt, calls him "just a friendly cat," while Stan Savran and others salute his passion for sports.

Deuce's given name is Lawrence Skurcenski and, by his count, he has seen more than 9,260 basketball games and 3,040 football games (although some wonder if that's even humanly possible). He keeps stats and scores on high school and college sports and provides media outlets and others with the numbers.

The filmmaking brothers, both Pittsburgh natives, go wide as they interview coaches, players, writers, sports announcers, Deuce's parents and, briefly, his longtime girlfriend. They talk to Deuce in the car and at games, trail him to the barbershop, briefly pop into his paper-laden bedroom and observe him as he launches into what his dad calls a "dissertation," all of which is united by music by Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa.

As thorough and entertaining as "Deuce" is, the filmmakers leave a few questions unanswered: What does he do in the off-season? What do his siblings have to say? Have computers changed the value of his stats? Does he ever plan to retire from this largely unpaid gig?

Still, even if you haven't been inside an overheated high school gym or on chilly football bleachers in a long time, the Grazianos manage to bring "Deuce" to vivid, entertaining, celebratory life.

"Deuce" will play tonight at 8 at the Regent Square Theater in Edgewood as part of the Three Rivers Film Festival. Skurcenski will attend a 7 p.m. reception at the theater, and the filmmakers will field questions after. Tickets at the door, $8. "Deuce" also will screen at the SouthSide Works Cinema on Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
