College Football Notebook: Fulmer out as coach at Tennessee
He will step down at end of the season
Tuesday, November 04, 2008

Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer has been forced out as coach after 17 years that included a national championship.

Fulmer, 58, his voice cracking and pausing to keep his composure, announced yesterday at a news conference that he will step aside at the end of the season. He said he was "accepting the university's decision."

Fulmer had a 150-51 record with the Vols, including a national title in 1998. But Tennessee fell on hard times this season and is just 3-6, including 1-5 in the SEC after a 27-6 loss Saturday at South Carolina.

Fulmer signed a new seven-year contract in the summer which was worth $2.4 million this season. A buyout of the contract after this season would cost $6 million.

"Many fans have been supportive, some have been very angry. All of us are disappointed," Fulmer said about this season.

Penn State

Senior kicker Kevin Kelly has been named one of 20 semifinalists for the Lou Groza Award. Kelly has made a field goal in a school record 29 consecutive games this season. He is No. 3 Penn State's first Lou Groza semifinalist since 1999 when Travis Forney was selected to the list.

• The Big Ten Conference announced that Penn State (5-0, 9-0) will play Indiana at noon Nov. 15 at Beaver Stadium. The Big Ten Network will televise the game.

Oklahoma

Defensive end Auston English could miss the next two games for the No. 6 Sooners after spraining his left knee. Coach Bob Stoops said English could be out "maybe three weeks" with the injury that knocked him out of a 62-28 win against Nebraska Saturday.

Toledo

Tom Amstutz will resign after the season as head football coach. Toledo (2-6) is heading for a third consecutive losing year. Amstutz is 57-38 in eight years at Toledo.
