Three top seeds will win titles
Friday, October 31, 2008

In three weeks, Gateway, Thomas Jefferson, Greensburg Central Catholic and Clairton will walk out of Heinz Field with championship trophies.

At least that's what The Fumbler says. Those are his picks in the four classifications. All are No. 1 seeds, except Greensburg Central Catholic, a No. 2 seed.

The Fumbler knows Beaver Falls fans might be ready to egg his new home in Wampum, but The Fumbler just can't get himself to pick all the No. 1 seeds.

The question is: Should you pay attention to The Fumbler's championship picks? Well, pay half attention. Since he started picking games for the Post-Gazette in 1993, he has correctly picked the champion 27 of 60 times, close to 50 percent.

Last week, The Fumbler was 48-17 (.738 percentage). For the season, he is 450-109 (.805).

Here is a look at some of this weekend's top playoff games (all game times 7:30 p.m.):

Upper St. Clair (6-3) at McKeesport (7-2) -- The WPIAL football steering committee has been criticized for making Upper St. Clair a No. 14 seed in AAAA. But what about McKeesport? The Tigers got a much tougher opponent than they expected. Winner: McKeesport.

Woodland Hills (4-5) at North Allegheny (5-4) -- Since becoming eligible in midseason, Woodland Hills running back Dom Timbers has made a difference in the offense. He could also be the difference in this game. Can North Allegheny recover after being handled by North Hills? Winner: Woodland Hills.

Montour (5-4) at Yough (5-4) -- The Fumbler would love to write that Yough will end the Keystone Conference's 28-game playoff losing streak. But he just can't. Winner: Montour.

Mars (6-3) at Chartiers Valley (7-2) -- How many teams in the history of the WPIAL playoffs have had a freshman start at quarterback? Not many. But that's what Chartiers Valley has in Wayne Capers. Winner: Chartiers Valley.

Beaver (7-2) at Sto-Rox (8-1) -- Beaver has the WPIAL's leading rusher in Jake Nardone. Sto-Rox has the WPIAL's second-leading passer in Paul Jones. Running is paramount in the WPIAL playoffs. Winner: Beaver.

Here are his other picks (home teams in capital letters):

WPIAL CLASS AAAA -- GATEWAY over Mt. Lebanon; CANON-MCMILLAN over Shaler; NORTH HILLS over Fox Chapel; PENN HILLS over Pine-Richland; BETHEL PARK over Hempfield; CENTRAL CATHOLIC over Penn-Trafford (at Fox Chapel).

WPIAL CLASS AAA -- THOMAS JEFFERSON over Uniontown; Hopewell over GREENSBURG SALEM; NEW CASTLE over Franklin Regional; INDIANA over Trinity; HIGHLANDS over Laurel Highlands; Montour over YOUGH; BLACKHAWK over Ringgold.

WPIAL CLASS AA -- BEAVER FALLS over McGuffey; FORD CITY over Keystone Oaks; GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC over Freeport; ALIQUIPPA over East Allegheny; SHADY SIDE ACADEMY over Bishop Canevin; SETON-LASALLE over Center; JEANNETTE over Valley.

WPIAL CLASS A -- CLAIRTON over Brentwood; Serra over MONESSEN; ROCHESTER over Chartiers-Houston; BETH-CENTER over Western Beaver; AVONWORTH over California; FORT CHERRY over North Catholic; MONACA over Carmichaels; SPRINGDALE over South Side Beaver.

CITY LEAGUE -- Brashear over Langley (Cupples Stadium).
