Penguins Notebook: Gretzky pushes for more from Coyotes
Thursday, October 30, 2008

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky, like the Penguins' Michel Therrien, is looking for more offense.

So, like Therrien, Gretzky has made some changes in his line combinations for tonight's game.

The Coyotes have 15 goals, the fewest in the Western Conference and the second-fewest in the league.

Top-line center Olli Jokinen now is playing with Shane Doan on the right wing and Todd Fedoruk on the left.

The second line has center Martin Hanzal, who has no goals, with Daniel Carcillo and Peter Mueller. Steven Reinprecht, who has been a healthy scratch for two games, will play with wingers Kevin Porter and Mikkel Boedker.

Daniel Winnik is playing with rookies Kyle Turris and Viktor Tikhonov, who is scoreless, on the fourth line.

"We're just trying to create some offense, which we desperately need," Gretzky told the Arizona Republic. "I think our work ethic is pretty solid and our attention to defensive hockey has been pretty good, but we've got to figure out a way to score. Offensively, we're not cutting the grade."

Crosby ups work ethic

Here is what Penguins center Sidney Crosby did at a fast-paced practice, a day after a 2-1 loss to San Jose in which he had an assist but no shots for the eighth time in his career and had one of his less successful nights in the faceoff circle, winning four and losing 16:

Crosby was the first one on the ice at HP Pavilion, the second the doors closed behind the Zamboni and almost 20 minutes before practice was due to start.

Before the formal part of the session, he worked against Mike Zigomanis, the team's top faceoff man, taking draws in both directions.

During the final drill -- breakaways followed by a rink-long skate and a place back in line for every shooter who missed -- Crosby scored early, then went to the idle end of the rink to work on chipping passes from the right dot into the slot. Eventually, he recruited rookie defenseman Alex Goligoski to repeatedly slide so Crosby could practice making those chips over a sprawled body.

Bryzgalov back in goal

After going with backup goaltender Mikael Tellqvist for two games to give Ilya Bryzgalov time off and a chance to work with assistant Grant Fuhr, Gretzky is going back to Bryzgalov tonight.

Bryzgalov is 2-3 with a 3.41 goals-against average and an .889 save percentage.

Trade date changed

The Penguins will be one of several teams to benefit from the NHL's decision to move the trade deadline from March 3 to March 4. The league's Players Association had a say in the decision to change the date.

There are 12 games scheduled for March 3, including a Penguins road game at Tampa Bay, but only two March 4. Trades the day of a game can be problematic in terms of filling out a lineup on short notice.

The Penguins will be on the road March 4 before playing at Florida the next night.
