Union sues Port Authority over North Shore shuttle
Thursday, October 30, 2008

The union representing bus and trolley drivers is challenging the Port Authority's decision to give Lenzner Coach Lines the right to shuttle people between Downtown hotels and the North Shore casino.

In a petition filed in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court, Local 85, Amalgamated Transit Union, maintains that the authority board abused its discretion in awarding the rights last month.

Among its points, the union argues approval was granted without considering the impact on Port Authority service, including the North Shore connector, and without "meaningful consideration" to the authority's legal obligations under its union contract.

In a statement, authority CEO Steve Bland said the agency acted legally and prudently. "The shuttle service will be a valuable asset to Pittsburgh's tourist industry, generates business for a local transportation company and it in no way competes with existing Port Authority service," he said.
