Pirates drop four pitchers from roster
Wednesday, October 29, 2008

The Pirates today outrighted four pitchers, including 2001 top draft pick John Van Benschoten, to Class AAA Indianapolis, meaning the quartet is off the team's 40-man roster.

In addition to Van Benschoten, who again this season failed to establish himself as a major league pitcher, right-handers Yoslan Herrera, Marino Salas and Ronald Belisario were outrighted to Indianapolis. Only Belisario did not pitch for the Pirates in 2008.

The moves leave the Pirates with 36 players on their 40-man roster. At some point, the Pirates will have to add back pitchers Tom Gorzelanny and Phil Dumatrait, who currently are on the 60-day disabled list.
