Election 2008
McCain, Palin hold rally in Hershey
Tuesday, October 28, 2008

HERSHEY -- Giant Center is the home of the Hershey Bears, but this morning it belonged to John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Arizona Sen. John McCain and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin were in town with their spouses to make what could be their final plea to Central Pennsylvania voters.

The fight for Pennsylvania's 21 electoral votes is ramping up with both presidential candidates in state yesterday and today. Mr. McCain and Mrs. Palin know they are down in the polls and have some ground to make up both here and nationally.

"Hershey, it is going to come down to the wire on Nov. 4 and it's going to come down to what we believe in. Our opponents put their faith in government; John and I, we put our faith in all of you," Mrs. Palin told the crowd of several thousand. "We believe in the forward movement of freedom, and not the constant expansion of government."

The campaign brought a message that Democrat Sen. Barack Obama's tax policies are socialist, that his association with Bill Ayers is troublesome and that his inexperience would jeopardize national security.

"It doesn't sound like any of you are supporting Barack the Wealth Spreader because you understand his plan to redistribute wealth will ultimately punish hard work. It discourages productivity and, I tell ya, it's going to stifle the entrepreneurial spirit that made this the greatest country on earth," Mrs. Palin told the party faithful in Harrisburg, a right-leaning town of 20,000 built around a chocolate factory.

Mr. McCain continued the attack on Mr. Obama, saying the Illinois senator wants to control wealth, not create it.

"I'm going to create wealth for all Americans by creating opportunity for all Americans," Mr. McCain said.

Mr. McCain headed next for North Carolina, while Mrs. Palin stayed behind for more campaigning in Pennsylvania.

Democratic candidate Barack Obama, who was in Pittsburgh yesterday, was at Widener University in Chester, Pa., for an appearance this morning.

A cold, steady rain made it feel like the temperature was right around freezing.

It was the same kind of weather that halted the fifth game of the World Series in Philadelphia last night, the first such suspension in the history of the baseball championship.

Several thousand people came out to hear Mr. Obama.

He told the shivering crowd, "I just want all of you to know that if we see this kind of dedication on Election Day, there is no way that we're not going to bring change to America."

Because of the rain that is falling in southeastern Pennsylvania, Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin are postponing a stop at a baseball stadium in Quakertown later today.

Mr. McCain then goes to North Carolina while Ms. Palin continues to Shippensburg in the afternoon and State College in the evening.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
