Pittsburgh Public Works Director Guy Costa, who last week suggested he'd seek "payback" against an unnamed city official who leaked word of his one-day suspension, will get an additional four days of unpaid leave and then return to work in November, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's administration announced today. The suspension is for making insubordinate comments.
Mr. Costa last Friday did not rule out a run for mayor, but today the city released a statement attributed to him saying, in part: "I regret having made the comments I did. It was inappropriate and I apologize. I will gladly serve the additional suspension time, and look forward to getting back to work."
He could not be immediately reached for further comment.
The new suspension will run from Tuesday through Friday of next week. Mr. Costa has been taking vacation time and compensatory time since mid-day Monday, when his previous suspension ended.
That suspension, which started around noon Friday, was for failing to act quickly enough on inappropriate overtime payments to four Environmental Services Bureau supervisors.
Mr. Costa learned of that suspension from a KDKA-TV reporter, and sounded off on the official who leaked it, suggesting they be forced to resign. Mayoral spokeswoman Joanna Doven said the leaker hasn't been identified.
