Shuman staffers hurt breaking up brawl
1 suffers head injury at juvenile facility
Saturday, October 18, 2008

A Shuman Juvenile Detention Center staff member was taken by ambulance to the hospital with a head injury and a second worker was injured slightly as the two tried to break up a fight among about a half-dozen youths Wednesday evening in the Lincoln-Lemington facility's gymnasium.

Shuman Director William T. "Jack" Simmons confirmed the incident yesterday. The more seriously injured worker was treated and released from the hospital. The second worker was able to continue with her shift, he said.

Deputy city Emergency Medical Services Chief Mark Bocian said an ambulance responded at 7:46 p.m. Wednesday to the report of an assaulted Shuman worker who was then transported UPMC Presbyterian.

Rick Grejda, business agent for Service Employees International Union Local 668, which represents youth care workers at Shuman, said he was told the veteran employee, 57, was knocked unconscious, but Mr. Simmons said that was not the case.

The staff member, working a voluntary overtime shift when the incident occurred, was recovering at home yesterday.

Mr. Simmons also confirmed there was another fight Thursday night, and again yesterday morning involving some of the same teens, but "whether or not they are related [to Wednesday's disturbance], I'm not sure at this point."

He said some of the youths were placed in temporary seclusion following yesterday's altercation.

"They seem to be calming down, but you never know," Mr. Simmons said.
