As of yesterday, trout stockings slated for later this month on several Western Pennsylvania lakes remained postponed as the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission awaits the results of health tests on fish from Tellico fish farm, the North Carolina-based supplier. Lake Erie and tributaries -- Streams were running low and clear, but heavy rainfall overnight Wednesday was expected to generate runoff. Anglers fishing the lakefront and the mouths of the creeks earlier this week were catching nice-size steelhead up to 14 pounds. Perch-fishing is winding to a close for the year, and rough conditions prevailed on the main lake yesterday. One angler reported catching just six pounds of perch Wednesday.
Allegheny River (Warren County) -- Releases from the dam muddied the water mid-week and anglers were targeting walleyes, northern pike, muskies and white bass off the bottom. Trout also were being released from the tailwaters to Conewango Creek.
Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County -- Anglers jigging Sonars continued to catch nice walleyes in 12 to 18 feet this week. Sam Nathan of Oakland caught a limit of 18-to-26-inch walleyes. Crappies were hitting around structure in 8 to 15 feet.
Oil Creek (Venango County) -- Water has been low and clear, although rain overnight Wednesday could change conditions. Anglers were catching recently stocked rainbow trout on Blue-Winged Olives and midges on top.
Allegheny River (Venango County) -- Low, clear water earlier this week made for a tough bass bite. The shallow water was yielding more fish than the slower rocky runs typically targeted in mid-fall. Soft jerkbaits were the ticket. Water was 58 to 60 degrees.
Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County) -- Crappies and bluegills were hitting in recent days, with shore anglers doing well in shallow water.
Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County) -- Bluegills abounded at Launch 3 and at the Sheakleyville bridge this week, and numbers of largemouth bass were hitting on topwaters from boat and shore. A few walleyes were taken on Fatheads fished 6 to 8 feet off the bottom, and quality perch were caught in waters 15 feet off the bottom on small minnows.
Lake Arthur (Butler County) -- Andy Radwanski of Prospect caught a 2-pound, 2-ounce crappie around a brush pile in 8 feet Monday. Tony Delazio of Pittsburgh caught a 42-inch, 19 1/2-pound muskie Oct. 9. Other anglers were catching largemouth bass and the occasional hybrid striper or walleye.
Allegheny River --Fishing began to pick up this week with catches of smallmouth bass, but few walleyes were reported. Catfish anglers were making nice catches. Mark Osiecki of Lower Burrell released three 4-pound smallmouths on flukes casting to the banks around Templeton just before dusk Saturday. The mouths of the creeks were drawing the most angling pressure.
Deer Creek (Allegheny County) -- Anglers were catching stocked trout, with sucker spawn, mini Foo Jigs and Trout Magnets working in low clear conditions earlier this week.
Monongahela River --A decent smallmouth bass bite was reported this week.
Beaver River (Beaver, Lawrence counties) -- Anglers caught several nice smallmouth bass and a couple of walleyes Tuesday.
Ohio River/Montour Run -- Anglers were catching bass and walleyes on jigging spoons, mainly at Dashields Dam. Montour Run was yielding recently stocked trout.
Peters Creek (Allegheny County) -- Anglers were catching trout on shrimp eggs and Power Bait in low, clear conditions.
Loyalhanna Lake (Westmoreland County) -- Three small muskies were released last week.
Loyalhanna Creek (Westmoreland County) -- Anglers targeting recently stocked trout in the Delayed Harvest section encountered low, clear conditions this week, but catches were coming on white and orange sucker spawn.
Conemaugh River Lake (Westmoreland County) -- Decent bass fishing was reported at this U.S. Army Corps of Engineers impoundment near Saltsburg last week.
Quemahoning Reservoir (Somerset County) -- Nice catches of bass were reported in recent weeks, including a few in excess of 3 pounds. A few walleyes also were caught.
Lake Somerset (Somerset County) -- Crappie action picked up in recent weeks, with anglers doing well from the pier.
Youghiogheny River -- A trout stocking last week brought anglers to the river.
Spring Creek (Centre County) -- lower than normal flow was reported yesterday, along with a dwindling morning Trico hatch and sporadic tan, olive and dun-color Caddis (16-18). Recommended flies included Green Weenies, scuds, cressbugs, Pheasant Tails, and Hare's Ears.
Little Juniata River (Blair County) -- Water was low yesterday. Anglers were advised to nymph generic flies, including Pheasant Tails, Hare's Ears, Caddis larvae and Green Weenies, or to strip small streamers along the banks. For more on Central Pennsylvania streams, visit www.tcoflyfishing.com.
Deep Creek Lake (Maryland) -- A number of walleye limits were taken in 5 to 10 feet in the Yough Walleye Association tournament Saturday.
