Police charge man in Penn Hills double homicide
Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Police have arrested a man in connection with the deaths last night of a brother and sister found inside a townhouse that is part of an apartment complex in Penn Hills.

The teens' mother, Nikiesha Warren, also was critically wounded in the incident, police said. She is in UPMC Presbyterian.

Allegheny County police arrested Keith Scott early this morning. Mr. Scott has been charged with two counts of homicide, aggravated assault, attempted homicide and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He apparently had been dating Ms. Warren.

The charges stem from the deaths of Naim Drake, 14, a student at Linton Middle School, and his sister, Ieisha Drake, 18, a 2008 graduate of Penn Hills High School; and the wounding of their mother.

Police were called to the Hulton Estates complex around 10 p.m., after friends of the victims became concerned and asked police to check on the residents.

When police arrived they found Naim slain in the living room, Ieisha was in a bedroom and their mother was in the basement. Both had been stabbed.

The county medical examiner later determined that the two children died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Ms. Warren had what appeared to be stab wounds to her face and chest, said Penn Hills police Chief Howard Burton. He did not have any further information on her condition.

Police had been searching for the 41-year-old Mr. Scott, who was thought to be driving one of the victim's cars, a silver Chevrolet Malibu. As he was being arrested, Mr. Scott stabbed himself in a suicide attempt and was hospitalized with a neck wound, Allegheny County police said.

Penn Hills police said Ms. Warren was injured so badly that she could not escape the basement and seek help.

"She was in such a physical condition that she could not get out," Chief Burton said.

The Penn Hills School District today issued a statement expressing sympathy for the family and said counseling is being made available at Linton and the high school.
