Nadal sees fight to retain No. 1

Rafael Nadal's reign at No. 1 is still young and already the Spaniard heads into the Madrid Masters expecting a fight to hold on to the top spot.

Nadal and Roger Federer both arrive in the Spanish capital refreshed from a three-week break that followed Davis Cup victories for Spain and Switzerland.

Federer also arrives with extra purpose after appearing to finally rebound from a below-par season brought on by a bout of mononucleosis. The second-ranked Swiss comes in on the heels of a U.S. Open victory last month and doubles Olympic gold.

"My goal right now is the same as before, to try my best every day," Nadal said yesterday. "For sure the goal for the end of this season is to try and finish with the No. 1 ranking."

Nadal's career season has come at the expense of Federer.

The 22-year-old Mallorca native rolled over Federer for a fourth consecutive French Open trophy, denied his main rival a sixth Wimbledon title in a row and then snapped Federer's record 237 weeks in the top spot.

• Top-seeded David Nalbandian capped a near perfect week with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win against local favorite Robin Soderling in the Stockholm Open final in Sweden. The seventh-ranked Argentine lost just one set in five matches on the Royal Tennis Hall's hard courts. "

Commissioner David Stern said the league likely would play regular-season games in London before the British capital hosts the 2012 Olympics. Stern, however, also said the possibility of taking meaningful games to Europe was nowhere near a done deal. "It's fair to say that we'll see a minimum of one and possibly more regular-season games by 2012."

• The NBA has formed a joint venture with Anschutz Entertainment Group to design and develop about 12 multipurpose arenas in major Chinese cities. AEG runs the O2, and the venture will be equally owned by the two parties. NBA commissioner Stern did not say when the plan would be starting, or where the buildings would be located.

Soccer

Having clinched a spot in the CONCACAF qualifying finals for the 2012 World Cup, the United States will sit many of its regulars for Wednesday's match at Trinidad and Tobago. Coach Bob Bradley released nine players from the roster, including eight starters from Saturday night's 6-1 rout of Cuba that clinched advancement.
