It took almost 40 years of roaming the sidelines for coach Jim Render to win 326 high school football games. It took another four weeks to reach victory 327 as Render's Upper St. Clair Panthers (4-3, 1-2) routed visiting Baldwin (0-7, 0-3) last night in a Great Southern Conference game, 35-0.
The Panthers snapped a three-game losing streak for the milestone victory that put Render in sole possession of second place in career wins in Pennsylvania.
His record is 327-106-7, including 272-75-1 in 30 seasons at Upper St. Clair.
It was the first time Upper St. Clair had gone three consecutive games without victory under Render since 1981 when the Panthers lost to North Hills and North Allegheny and tied Butler. Overtime was not used in the WPIAL for regular-season games at that time.
Reed Apfelbaum scored on three touchdown runs to lead Upper St. Clair against Baldwin. Clay Ilkin caught a 35-yard pass from Alex Park, and Alex Romah finished the scoring with a 1-yard run.
Upper St. Clair claimed its first victory since a 30-28 win against North Allegheny Sept. 12.
Baldwin has lost 11 games in a row since beating Upper St. Clair Sept. 28, 2007.
Canon-McMillan 35, Mt. Lebanon 28
Rallying from a two-touchdown halftime deficit, the Big Macs (5-2, 3-0) toppled visiting Mt. Lebanon (1-6, 1-2) in the Great Southern Conference. Mike Hull got the comeback started with a 31-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and it was followed by a two fourth-quarter scores by Chad Hagan, covering 2 and 6 yards. Mt. Lebanon, which had 182 yards passing in the first half, was held to 10 yards in the second half. The Big Macs rolled up 24 first downs and 392 yards total offense compared to 12 first downs and 243 yards for the Blue Devils. Hull led Canon-McMillan with 114 yards rushing on 23 carries.
North Hills 21, Butler 3
The host Indians (6-1, 3-0) remained unbeaten in the Northern Six Conference, scoring three second-half touchdowns to break a 0-0 halftime stalemate. Justin Heinauer led North Hills, completing 5 of 7 passes for 147 yards. Heinauer threw touchdown passes of 16 yards to Cody Patton and 57 yards to Max Creighan. Elijah David capped the North Hills scoring with a 14-yard run. With North Allegheny's loss to Pine-Richland Thursday, North Hills is in sole possession of first place in the Northern Six.
Hempfield 49, Connellsville 7
Hempfield (3-4, 2-3) extended Connellsville's two-season losing streak to 15 games and led, 36-0, at halftime in a Foothills Conference game. Hempfield amassed 18 first downs and 503 yards total offense. R.J. Thomas led the Spartans with three touchdowns, and Dante Nania threw three touchdown passes. The Falcons fell to 0-7 overall, 0-5 in conference.
Bethel Park 39, Peters Township 6
No. 3 Bethel Park (7-0, 3-0) claimed a Great Southern Confernce victory at Peters Township (2-5, 1-2). Lyle Marsh led Bethel Park with 113 yards rushing. Bethel Park led in first downs, 14-9, and outgained Peters Township, 386-207. John Schademan opened the scoring for Bethel Park by catching a 68-yard pass from Erik Olson.
Penn-Trafford 38, Latrobe 10
The host Warriors (3-4, 3-2) scored in every quarter en route to a Foothills Conference win against Latrobe (2-5, 1-4). Dab Tuder led Penn-Trafford with touchdown runs of 10 and 5 yards. Matt Hyland scored twice on 1-yard runs Hyland also completed 11 of 14 passes for 147 yards, throwing an 8-yard touchdown pass to Mike Galet.
McKeesport 56, Norwin 21
No. 2 McKeesport (6-1, 5-0) scored an easy win at Norwin (2-5, 1-4) in the Foothills Conference. The Tigers have won their conference games by a cumulative score of 248-55.
Penn Hills 37, Kiski Area 12
Chris Darby ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns for No. 5 Penn Hills (4-3, 3-0) which claimed it third consecutive win with a rout of visiting Kiski Area (0-7, 0-3) in the Big East Conference. The Indians are in first place in the Big East.
Central Catholic 35, Plum 0
The Vikings (5-2, 2-1) got back on the winning track after having a four-game winning streak snapped last week by Penn Hills as they blanked the host Mustangs (0-7, 0-3) in the Big East Conference.
