WPIAL Class AA Roundup: Shady Side ends Ford City's conference run

For the first time three years Ford City tasted defeat inside of Allegheny Conference play. Last night the No. 4 Sabers saw their record-tying 23-game conference winning streak come to a screeching halt at home in a 22-0 loss to unbeaten Shady Side Academy.

Shady Side Academy's Bill Nickel returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and the Indians (6-0, 6-0) were on their way to handing Ford City ( 5-1, 5-1) its first conference loss since Oct. 7, 2005, when it lost to Valley, 27-20.

Nickel also rushed for two scores in the contest from 3 and 1 yards and finished with 92 rushing yards on 11 carries.

The teams entered the game almost identical statistically with Shady Side Academy holding a 177-176 advantage in points and defensively had given up 31 points to Ford City's 33 on the season.

Sean Hannon accounted for the Indians' other points with a 24-yard field goal in the opening quarter.

OTHER GAMES

Burrell 42, Apollo-Ridge 15

The Bucs (3-3, 3-3) jumped out to a 28-7 halftime edge and cruised to an Allegheny Conference win against host Apollo-Ridge (2-4, 2-4). Troy Highfield scored three touchdowns and Cameron Nelson added two for Burrell. Nelson finished as the game's leading rusher with 136 yards on 25 carries. Highfield added 97 yards on 18 rushing attempts.

Kittanning 49 Deer Lakes 35

Deer Lakes quarterback Geoff Landry completed 24 of 45 passes for 351 yards and four touchdowns, but it wasn't enough as the Lancers (2-4, 2-4) couldn't stop Kittanning's ground attack, which featured three 100-yard rushers in an Allegheny Conference loss at Kittanning (3-3, 3-3). Logan Atwood led the charge with 166 yards but was followed by Chris Shepard's 157 and Jake Burdett's 107 as the Wildcats racked up a total of 434 rushing yards.

Valley 14, Freeport 3

Lebren O'Neal carried 23 times for 101 yards including a 34-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to lead Valley (5-1, 5-1) to an Allegheny Conference win at Freeport (3-3, 3-3). The Vikings defense yielded only a 37-yard field goal by Freeport's Andrew Vidra in the first quarter and has allowed a total of 29 points in six games.

Northgate 30, Cornell 25

The Flames (1-5, 1-5) got their first win of the year by slipping past Cornell (0-6, 0-6) in Century Conference play. Pat Carr scored two touchdowns and rushed for a game-high 149 yards for Northgate.

Keystone Oaks 23, Bishop Canevin 3

The Golden Eagles (6-0, 6-0) remained perfect with a Century Conference win against Bishop Canevin (2-4, 2-4). Dion Wiegand rushed for 151 and two touchdowns for Keystone Oaks. The Crusaders failed to reach the end zone against a stout Keystone Oaks defensive unit which has only yielded 25 points this season.

Quaker Valley 31, South Park 28

Quaker Valley (3-3, 3-3) picked up a key Century Conference road victory after slipping past South Park (2-4, 2-4). Korrtezz Martin had 261 yards on 24 rushing attempts for the Quakers and scored the winning touchdown on a 45-yard with 1:42 remaining in the fourth quarter. Martin also scored touchdowns on runs of 63 and 60 yards in the contest.

Seton-LaSalle 21, South Fayette 10

Seton-LaSalle quarterback Anthony Rizzo passed for 109 yards and ran for 87 to lead the Rebels (5-1, 5-1) to a Century Conference win at South Fayette (2-4, 2-4). Rizzo hit Cory LaPiana with a 10-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to give the Rebels a 21-7 halftime edge.

Sto-Rox 20, Steel Valley 7

Sto-Rox improved to 6-0 for the first time in over 20 years with its Century Conference win at Steel Valley (3-3, 3-3). Vikings quarterback Paul Jones ran for two touchdowns and connected with Brandon Austin on a 26-yard scoring pass. It was Jones' WPIAL leading 18th touchdown pass of the season Jones finished 11 of 21 for 150 yards in the contest.

Charleroi 14, Waynesburg 13

Quinton Briggs' second rushing touchdown of the game from 2 yards in the third quarter lifted Charleroi (2-4, 2-4) to a narrow Interstate Conference win at Waynesburg (1-5, 1-5). Briggs had opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter before the Raiders rallied to take a 13-7 halftime lead on two Nick Patton rushing touchdowns.

Jeannette 27, McGuffey 13

The No. 2 Jayhawks (6-0, 6-0) trailed, 13-6, at halftime before posting 21 unanswered second half points in their Interstate Conference win at McGuffey (3-3, 3-3). Quarterback Cameron Baradziej scored three touchdowns for Jeannette as it ran its win streak to 22 consecutive games. The Jayhawks' Jordan Hall led all rushers with 171 yards on 12 attempts.

Mount Pleasant 34, Brownsville 0

Mike Rosebosky rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns to lead Mt. Pleasant (3-3, 3-3) to its Interstate Conference win against winless Brownsville (0-6, 0-6).

South Allegheny 38, Washington 14

South Allegheny quarterback Zach Anderson hit Jordan Bills for a pair of touchdowns from 17 and 10 yards and Mike Clearly ran for a pair of 1-yard touchdowns for the Gladiators (4-2, 4-2) in their Interstate Conference victory at Washington (1-5, 1-5).

Aliquippa 28, Center 17

The Quips (4-2, 3-2) jumped to a 28-10 halftime lead and held on for the Midwestern Conference win against visiting Center (5-1, 4-1). Maurice Carter ran for a 89-yard touchdown in the second quarter and posted a game-high 155 yards on 13 carries for Aliquippa.

Mohawk 60, Ellwood City 37

Mohawk (4-2, 4-2) had its way with visiting Ellwood City (0-6, 0-5) in their Midwestern Conference matchup. Ellwood City's defense continued its struggles and has now given up 254 points in its six games this season.

New Brighton 21, Freedom 20

The Lions (1-5, 1-4) notched their first win of the season squeaking past host Freedom (1-5, 1-5) in Midwestern Conference play. Trey Hall rushed for two touchdowns and a game-high 112 yards on 22 carries to lead New Brighton.

Greensburg Central Catholic 51 East Allegheny 21

WPIAL leading scorer David Miller scored six touchdowns on his way to 217 yards in the No. 5 Centurions (6-0, 6-0) Interstate Conference win against visiting East Allegheny (4-2, 4-2). Miller, who pushed his season total to 24 touchdowns, scored on runs of 34, 8, 27, 51, 2, and 4 yards.
