STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- The Penguins got a scare at practice yesterday when center Evgeni Malkin fell during a one-on-one drill and slammed back-first into a goalpost.

He grimaced and trainers rushed to him as he stayed down, but, after a few minutes, he got up and finished the session.

"He'll be fine," coach Michel Therrien said.

Beech missing

Forward Kris Beech, reassigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last week as part of a roster cut, has not reported to the American Hockey League team since clearing waivers. The Penguins hope to determine his status in the next few days.

Beech, first acquired in the Jaromir Jagr trade in 2001, was picked up off waivers in January but was limited to five games because of a broken wrist. He was re-signed over the summer.

Talbot still hurting

Center Max Talbot sat out of practice because of lingering soreness in his leg, where he was hit by a shot during a preseason game Friday in Toronto. He is not expected to play tonight in Helsinki, where the Penguins will complete their preseason schedule with an exhibition game against Jokerit of the Finnish Elite League, and will be re-evaluated before the season opener Saturday.

Winger Petr Sykora, meanwhile, who had not skated since Friday because of illness, practiced.

"It wasn't easy out there, but I'm glad I'm back," said Sykora, who hopes to play tonight.

Pesonen faces old foe

Finnish winger Janne Pesonen, signed as a free agent over the summer, has some history with Jokerit from his days with Karpat in the same league.

"It's a good team," Pesonen said. "We played many times against them in the playoffs and twice in the finals."

Still, the game tonight is not about reminiscing or familiarity because Pesonen is one of several Penguins not fully sure he will make the final roster.

"For me, it's a chance to play well and try to get on the team, so I don't think that much about where we are playing or who we are playing," he said.

Slap shots

The Penguins traded the rights to defenseman Michal Sersen, an unsigned 2004 fifth-round draft pick, to Tampa Bay in exchange for the Lightning's fifth-round pick in the 2009 draft. Sersen played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he was a teammate of Penguins captain Sidney Crosby in Rimouski, and has spent the past two seasons playing professionally in his native Slovakia. ... The Penguins practiced for the first time at Globe Arena, site of their regular-season opener Saturday against Ottawa and where new ice and reconfigured boards have been installed to match the smaller NHL rink size. "The boards are good. The ice is a little snowy," Crosby said. ... Therrien said Marc-Andre Fleury and Dany Sabourin each will play half the game tonight in goal.
