David DelGreco

Seton-LaSalle

Last week: On Sept. 23, soccer player DelGreco scored three goals to become the school's all-time leader in goals scored with 71. He added five more goals two days later against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

Check this out: DelGreco, a senior, broke the school record set by Terry Boland, who now plays at Virginia Tech. DelGreco will likely finish his career with 12 varsity letters in soccer, basketball and tennis. His grandfather, Bobby, played for six Major League Baseball teams, including the Pirates in the 1950s.

I'm sure you've been asked this a lot, but what is your favorite sport? Soccer. Honestly, because that's the sport where I think I'm the best, and because that's the sport where our team has had the most success.

Does the school record mean much to you? It does because it's hard to do, and also because Terry Boland is one of my friends. It also represents the team's success over the years.

Favorite sport to watch? Probably college basketball.

Your father, Bob, is a well-known defense attorney in Pittsburgh. You ever sit in the courtroom for one of his cases? No. I've been in his office, but never in the courtroom.

Have you ever wanted to be in the courtroom? I don't know, but I think I do want to be a lawyer some day.

People might be surprised to know that you ... I'm a 3.9 student.

Sarah Shashura

California

Last week: Shashura won the WPIAL Class AA singles tennis tournament, defeating Vincentian's Elise Held, 7-6 (7-0), 6-4, in the final Friday at Shady Side Academy.

Check this out: California does not have a girls' tennis team, but an individual can still represent a school in the WPIAL tournament. Only a freshman, Shashura is ranked among the top 200 players in her age group nationally.

You've won your share of USTA tournaments. How does winning a WPIAL title rank among those feats? It's definitely a great accomplishment, better than the tournaments just because I get recognized for it. I've been working hard the last six years but never received recognition for winning any of them. Getting recognition is a nice feeling.

Who is your favorite professional tennis player? Probably Rafael Nadal. He's just a really good player with a nice game. He mixes it up a lot, and he likes to come to the net, just like me.

You've said you might play with the Cal boys next year. Have you played against boys and can you beat a lot of them? I've never played them in tournaments -- just girls. But in practice I've hit a lot with the boys, usually older ones to get more competition. I can beat half. It just depends who I play. Some are way beyond my level, and some of them I can beat.

How often do you change the strings on your racket, and how often do you buy a new racket? I break my strings about every week and a half, and I actually just got three new rackets two weeks ago as part of a package deal with Prince. Being in the top 200 in the nation, they provide you with a package deal with three rackets. I had my previous ones for about three years.
