Thursday, October 02, 2008

Police have obtained arrest warrants for suspected shooters in homicides in Perry South and Beltzhoover over the past week, Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper announced yesterday.

Devon Shealey, 22, of the North Side, is wanted in connection with the death of Jason Brown, who was shot and killed Sunday evening outside an apartment building in the 2900 block of North Charles Street in the Perry South neighborhood.

Mr. Shealey, 22, is described as a dark-skinned black man, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, about 170 pounds, with braided black hair and brown eyes. His last known address is Luray Street. He's considered to be armed and dangerous.

According to police, Mr. Shealey approached Mr. Brown as he was sitting on the steps of the apartment building, smoking marijuana. He asked if he could smoke some of the drug; he then pulled a gun from his waistband and shot Mr. Brown in the head, police said.

Mr. Brown ran to a nearby jitney stand. He was taken to Allegheny General Hospital, where he died.

Police also have an arrest warrant for Dale Shelton in connection with the shooting death of Sandra Stewart last week on Curtin Street in Beltzhoover. Ms. Stewart was shot in the head on Sept. 24 and later died from her injuries. Two other people were injured in the shooting.

Police matched a .40-caliber bullet with a gun Mr. Shelton had allegedly used in the shooting. He faces homicide charges, among others.

He's 18, 5 feet 11 inches tall, approximately 155 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. His last known address is Natchez Street, Mount Washington. He's also considered armed and dangerous.

Mr. Shelton was a passenger in a silver car when he saw a male juvenile on Curtin Street who had robbed him, police said. He left the car at the corner of Warrington Avenue and started shooting at the juvenile, who pulled out a gun and fired back.

A bullet hit Ms. Stewart, who was sitting outside her home at 21 Curtin St. with her sister and four grandchildren.

Another man standing near the house, 27-year-old Kevin Williams, retrieved a .45-caliber gun to "protect himself and his family," police said.

Police are searching for Mr. Williams. Investigators are in discussions with the Allegheny County district attorney's office about possible charges against Mr. Williams and the juvenile shooter, who is currently being held at Shuman Juvenile Detention Center on unrelated charges.

Police would not discuss possible motives for the shootings because the investigation is ongoing.
