About People: WPXI hires replacement for departing Archinal
Thursday, October 02, 2008

Jennifer Abney, morning and noon anchor at WKRG in Mobile, Ala., will replace Newlin Archinal, WPXI news director Corrie Harding announced today. Archinal left Channel 11 after yesterday morning's newscast.

Abney is expected to start at WPXI on Oct. 20 and will appear on the air shortly after. Abney's bio at WKRG indicates she previously worked at a station in Wilmington, N.C., where the Alabama native went "under the laser" for an in-depth look at Lasik eye surgery. She received a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism and marketing from Troy State University. (Rob Owen, Post-Gazette TV editor)

Billy Ray at the zoo

Country music and television star Billy Ray Cyrus will roar into Pittsburgh today, where he will meet his namesake tiger cub at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium.

The Siberian tiger cub, born on Mother's Day, was named by donors who paid to name it in honor of a deceased family member who was a big fan of Cyrus.

Cyrus, the father of Miley "Hannah Montana" Cyrus, plays that role on the Disney Channel series. His most recent album, his 10th, is "Home at Last," and he has been a host of CMT's "Nashville Star."

Billy Ray the tiger will likely grow up to be about 11 feet long and 450 pounds. (Associated Press)

Arts Council awards

The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council will bring together artists and legislators for the 2008 Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts Awards tomorrow at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts in Shadyside.

State legislators approve the budget for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and this year some of them and their representatives will hand a portion of that money directly to the artists, arts organizations and community groups in their districts. Scheduled to attend are U.S. Congressman Tim Murphy, state Senators Jay Costa and Wayne Fontana, and state Reps. Joe Preston, Matthew Smith, Chelsa Wagner, Dan Frankel and Nick Kotik. PSO recording

The final installment of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's three-disc Brahms symphony set is officially out, with conductor Marek Janowski leading the PSO in Symphony No. 4 and a number of Hungarian Dances, taken from live recordings.

The PSO had hoped that the PentaTone disc would be available in time for the opening of its subscription season, but will have them available at Heinz Hall at concerts in the future, along with the two earlier albums. Together again

Greg Kinnear is on the promotion trail for two films, "Ghost Town" and "Flash of Genius" (out tomorrow). But he couldn't help talking about the movie in progress, "Green Zone," in which Kinnear reunited with "Stuck on You" sibling Matt Damon. It's a thriller instead of a comedy, and it takes place in Iraq, but the biggest difference was the angle.

"This was fun to not have to be stuck to Matt for the entire film," says Kinnear. "To actually do scenes where we don't have to twist our necks at 45-degree angles in order to have a conversation was quite nice.

"We were doing our first scene together, I was like, 'Hey, we've never acted like this before. I've never seen both your eyes in a scene before.' " (Betsy Pickle, Knoxville News Sentinel)
