HARRISBURG -- This is a warning note for Western Pennsylvanians who plan to travel eastward on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and could reach a busy stretch of Interstate 81 just west and north of Harrisburg. State police say they'll be looking for speeders and other "aggressive drivers.''

The "Ticket Aggressive Cars and Trucks'' initiative, or TACT, will focus on a 33-mile section of I-81 from the Newville exit in Cumberland County to the intersection with Interstate 83 in Dauphin County. That section includes the area where the Pennsylvania Turnpike meets I-81 in Cumberland County, near the Carlisle exit, used by drivers heading to northeast Pennsylvania or upstate New York.

"We typically have a lot of trucks through this area and troopers have investigated more than 750 crashes involving commercial vehicles along I-81 in Cumberland and Dauphin counties since 2003,'' said acting state police Commissioner Frank Pawlowski.

State police will "aggressively look for violations . . . that include speeding, following too closely, reckless driving and unsafe lane changes.'' State police will use marked and unmarked patrol cars and fixed-wing aircraft in their enforcement effort. As for trucks, inspectors will look for faulty equipment, overweight vehicles and fatigued drivers.
