Among those Romeo Crennell stared down this week in announcing that Derek Anderson would remain the starter for the Cleveland Browns was legendary Browns back and current team executive adviser Jim Brown.
On a Cleveland radio show, Brown said the organization was in agreement that it was time to go to Brady Quinn, the 22nd pick in the 2007 draft. Crennel, obviously, has gone against the current by sticking with Anderson for today's game with Cincinnati.
Said Brown: "If they don't [go with Quinn], I don't know what will happen. I've been in meetings all day. I've met with coach, the president of the organization, team captains, individual players, we all seem to be in one accord. But it's up to the coach to make the final decision. If he makes the right decision, I think we can be out of this terrible slump we're in."
A pall was cast over the Tampa Bay organization this week upon news that the infant son of kicker Matt Bryant died Wednesday morning. "We lost a key member of our family," Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden said. Gruden, fighting back tears, opened his post-practice news conference Wednesday by revealing that Tryson Bryant, born last spring, "just didn't wake up" that morning.
Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez needs just 50 receiving yards vs. Denver to overtake Shannon Sharpe's NFL record of 10,060 yards receiving. Already in his possession are the records for touchdown catches (67) and receptions (835).
Going into this season, the Eagles were 0-12 under Andy Reid against AFC teams that went on to make the playoffs. The Steelers lost to the Eagles, 15-6, last week. The Steelers are in the AFC.
The Broncos are changing starting quarterbacks again, going back to Damon Huard for their date with Denver. ... Who says nicknames aren't what they used to be? They've taken to calling Cowboys' brutish back Marion Barber "Marion the Barbarian." ... Ten running backs were taken ahead of Steve Slaton in the April draft. Only three of them are averaging more rushing yards per game than Slaton's 79.5: the Bears' Matt Forte (101.3), the Titans' Chris Johnson (92.0) and the Raiders' Darren McFadden (84.0).
