Where to go ... Leaf watching
Sunday, September 28, 2008

What to do: A decrease in hours of sunlight and lower temperatures cause the depletion of chlorophyll in leaves, revealing and enhancing the natural colors that have always been there. Pennsylvania's autumn leaf bloom begins in the northern tier, particularly in the mountainous north-central and northeastern counties. Route 6, the state highway that runs roughly parallel and 10-15 miles south of the Pennsylvania-New York border, is among the best roads in the commonwealth for fall leaf watching. Northern tier leaves peak in the first two weeks of October. The central zone (from the West Virginia border to Erie and east surrounding I-80) peaks in mid-October. The Southern Zone peaks during the last two weeks of October.
