New Castle recorded its second consecutive Parkway Conference upset after opening the season with three straight losses.
Keith Keene scored three touchdowns to lead the Red Hurricanes (2-3, 2-0) to a 35-17 win against previously unbeaten West Allegheny (4-1, 2-1), the No. 5 ranked team in Class AAA.
Keene rushed for 119 yards on 11 carries and scored on runs of 7, 74 and 7 yards. New Castle's Michael Bongivengo led all rushers with 179 yards on 14 carries and scored on a 33-yard run.
Tyler Wehner threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead the top-ranked Jaguars (4-1) to a non-conference win against the visiting Mustangs (1-4). Wehner completed 11 of 17 passes for 237 yards and connected with Brock DeCicco, Dan Virgin and Jim Giansante on scoring passes. Brian Baldrige rushed for 169 yards and scored on runs of 15 and 13 yards for the Jaguars.
E.J. Banks and Philip Peckich each ran for two touchdowns to lead the No. 4 Spartans (4-1, 2-0) to a convincing Parkway Conference victory against winless Ambridge (0-5, 0-3). Banks rushed for 145 yards on 14 carries and scored on runs of 1 and 11 yards. Peckich scored on runs of 1 and 17 yards. Banks also threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Birko.
Josh Rager rushed for 128 yards on 31 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 4 and 2 yards to lead the visiting Panthers (4-1, 1-0) to a narrow win against the Knights (1-4, 0-1) in a Greater Allegheny Conference opener. Knoch's only touchdown came on a 3-yard run by Jacob McTighe.
Duane Burgwin rushed for 340 yards on 21 carries and scored on runs of 75, 8, 62 and 71 yards, as the Titans (2-3, 1-2) posted their first Big Seven Conference win against the visiting Leopards (2-3, 0-2). Belle Vernon's Cory Williams rushed for 133 yards on 12 carries and scored on a 4-yard run.
Dan Mountain threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jake Spaziani with 38 seconds left to lead the Rams (4-1, 1-1) to a Big Seven Conference win against the visiting Warriors (3-2, 1-2). The two also connected on a 1-yard scoring pass. Mountain completed 14 of 24 passes for 360 yards.
The Colts (4-1, 3-0) recorded their third consecutive shutout with this Big Seven Conference victory against host Hillers (2-3, 1-2). Santino Coury completed 7 of 16 passes for 105 yards for the Colts and connected with Wayne Capers on a 29-yard scoring pass, while Jim Riley scored on a pair of 1-yard runs.
The Talbots (1-4, 1-0) gave coach Jacques DeMatteo his first victory and handed the Little Indians (4-1, 0-1) their first loss with this Greater Allegheny Conference win. Zach Carter's conversion provided the winning point. Andrew Bly rushed for 137 yards on 34 carries and scored on a 2-yard run for the Talbots.
Ben Hoffer and Bob Bridge combined to rush for 277 yards and four scores, as the Cougars (3-2, 3-0) remained unbeaten in the Keystone Conference with a win against the visiting Colonials (1-4, 0-3). Hoffer rushed for 156 yards on six carries and scored on runs of 56 and 99 yards. Bridge had 121 yards on eight carries and scored on runs of 16 and 19 yards.
The Trojans (2-3, 1-2) claimed their first Keystone Conference win since 2005. Dominic Huffman rushed for 148 yards on 10 carries and scored on runs of 32 and 27 yards for Derry. Southmoreland (0-5, 0-2) was led by Mike Stokes, who rushed for 203 yards on 31 carries and scored on a 3-yard run.
Matt Adams rushed for 145 yards on 23 carries and scored on three 1-yard runs, as the Golden Lions (3-2, 2-0) rallied to defeat the Red Raiders (3-2, 2-1) in the Keystone Conference. Doug Sanner threw for 216 yards and a touchdown for the Red Raiders.
