WTAE changes news anchor lineup
Friday, September 26, 2008

WTAE announced a shake-up of just about all its anchor teams yesterday, promoting Andrew Stockey to 5, 6 and 11 p.m. and moving Mike Clark to mornings and noon.

Sally Wiggin will lose her seat at 6 p.m. to Michelle Wright in the re-alignment, with Wiggin anchoring just once a day at noon.

Wright also will go down to one newscast a day as Stockey takes her spot at 5 p.m.

Meteorologist assignments will also shift. Demetrius Ivory will continue on the morning news but he'll do a split shift, coming in to offer forecasts at 5 p.m., too. Weekend meteorologist Erin Kienzle will offer forecasts at noon; Stephen Cropper will forecast at 6 and 11 p.m.

The new anchor lineup takes effect Monday.

The biggest change to the lineup is the departure of Wiggin from an anchor role in the evening news that she's held for more than two decades. She first became a weekday evening anchor in November 1986, and news director Bob Longo said she will continue to have a presence in the evenings as a reporter who "gets" the big interviews.

"We have over time developed a series of 'extras,' meaty, substantive, one-on-one interviews," he said. "As we enter into the people meter world where newscasts are being looked at and rated differently, we need more, better, unique, 'only on' content and in Pittsburgh, if anyone gets the 'get' interview, it's Sally Wiggin."

Longo said Wiggin and Wright will both contribute reports that will most likely air at 5 or 11 p.m.

Clark returns to the shift he began in at Channel 4, arriving at the station as a morning and noon anchor in August 1995.

Wiggin and Clark had not returned calls seeking comment by deadline.

Stockey started at WTAE as a weekend sports anchor in 1995 and moved over to news as a morning anchor in June 2006. That same month the station began laying the groundwork for pairing Stockey and Wendy Bell as co-anchors by pairing the two in public service announcements.
