Jeannette talent pool deeper than Pryor
Friday, September 26, 2008

Jeannette coach Ray Reitz knew last year what some teams are learning this season: The Jayhawks had some talented football players other than Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor during their undefeated run to the WPIAL and PIAA Class AA titles.

"Everybody made that a one-man team," Reitz said. "It couldn't be further from the truth."

Four games into the 2008 season, Jeannette has produced an impressive encore to its championship year. Not only are the Jayhawks undefeated, they've outscored opponents, 178-0.

Jeannette, ranked No. 3 in the PIAA in Class AA by the Post-Gazette, will take a 20-game winning streak into an Interstate Conference contest at Charleroi (1-3) tonight at 7:30.

"Terrelle Pryor was our home-run hitter, a guy that could do anything," Reitz said. "He's probably the best player Western Pennsylvania has seen in 50 years.

"But we have a lot of kids who are back. We have a core that's played in a lot of big games. We expected to have a respectable team."

Leading that core is quarterback Cameron Baradziej. A 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior who played wide receiver and defensive back last season, he has guided the offense to 43, 41, 45 and 49 points in four games.

"Cameron is a work in progress, but he's also as good as any quarterback in the conference," Reitz said. "He runs well. He throws the ball well. I'm very happy with Cameron."

Baradziej, who played on Jeannette's PIAA championship basketball team, also saw some time at quarterback last season as Pryor's backup.

"All Cameron has to do for us is manage the game," he said. "We told Terrelle the same thing. Cameron has enough skilled players around him that he doesn't have to win the game by himself."

Jeannette's depth on offense was evident in its season-opening, 43-0 home win against conference rival East Allegheny.

Several players recorded touchdowns for the Jayhawks: senior running back Dane Vaughan (57-yard run), senior wide receiver Moziah Harris (20-yard catch from Baradziej), senior running back Mariell McGowan (67-yard run), senior running back and Ohio State recruit Jordan Hall (84- and 36-yard runs) and junior tight end Dylan Roycroft (11-yard catch from Hall).

"We're doing it by committee," Reitz said, "because all of these kids can play."

So far, Jeannette has done most of its damage in the first half.

Reitz has lifted his starters by halftime or shortly into the third quarter in every game, much like in 2007, when his team scored a state-record 860 points and never won by fewer than 29 points.

"They're not getting a lot of reps," Reitz said.

Neither is the first-team defense. To Reitz, that makes his team's shutout streak even more impressive.

"It's remarkable," he said. "Our second- and third-team players are in there, and they're still getting the job done. Those kids are doing a good job."

But despite the impressive start, Reitz said the team is still a work in progress.

"We need to get sharper on offense. We need to get crisper on defense as far as knowing our assignments. We're still trying to build some depth on our team."

Jeannette has beaten East Allegheny and South Allegheny, both 3-1 in conference play, but still must play Greensburg Central Catholic in its season finale Oct. 25 at Hempfield.

Greensburg Central Catholic also is 4-0 in conference play and has outscored its opponents, 161-22.

"That's a tough part of our schedule," Reitz said.
