Zoom-zoom just got "zoomier" with Mazda's all new 2009 Mazda6.
The Mazda6, introduced in 2002 as a 2003 model, is known for its performance, handling and fun-to-drive factor, making it a hit with both the consumers and the journalists.
The current model is smaller than the competition, and in the last year or two has been passed by some competitors in both horsepower and performance.
To make things even more challenging, the field of family-size cars has gotten even more crowded with new or completely redone models such as the Chevy Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry.
Enter the 2009 Mazda6, which is longer, roomier and even better handling than its previous incarnation. Inside you'll find 1.5 inches more of rear legroom and 0.9 inch more knee room. Headroom's up too, 0.7 inch. Luggage space has increased by about 9 percent.
Styling certainly sends out the "zoom-zoom" message in a big way. There are muscular bulges over the fenders, a graceful semifastback roofline, a spoiler and gorgeous dual exhaust pipes.
All of these elements send a message of purposeful aggression.
The "Active Adoptive Shift" control feature copied from the Mazda RX-8 sports coupe has a gear ratio that allows for optimum acceleration when the car is rounding a corner. If you go into a bend while decelerating, the same system speeds up your downshift speed so that you can get the maximum amount of engine braking.
Two main power plants are being offered -- a 170-horsepower, 3.7-liter four, and an all-new, 3.7-liter, 272-horsepower V-6. Unlike many other family-car makers that don't offer manual transmissions, Mazda is offering customers a choice of a six-speed manual or a five- or six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel mileage estimates are not available.
The interior features Mazda's trademark black and beige color scheme, with liberal use of "piano black" and tasteful materials. The aluminum trim on the center stack creates an upscale feel. That's important for Mazda because one of its goals was to move the Mazda6 "up-market" to compete better in its segment.
Driving the four cylinder was enjoyable, as the engine is generally responsive. But there were times when it sounded noisy under acceleration or heading uphill. Tire noise also was an issue every now and then.
There was lots of emphasis on improving quality control, particularly with the air-conditioning system and the problem of brake dust, which resulted in squealing brakes. These were two of the top items mentioned in consumer surveys about the current generation Mazda6.
Prices on the Mazda6 ranges from $18,550 without destination fees, to $28,260. Standard equipment includes full power accessories, air conditioning, power rack and pinion steering, anti-lock brakes, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, six air bags, traction control, stability control, an AM/FM stereo audio system with MP3, Sirius satellite compatibility and steering-wheel-mounted controls.
The base model is the Mazda6 i, followed up the ladder by Mazda6 i Sport, Mazda6 i Touring, Mazda6 i Grand Touring, Mazda6 s Sport, Mazda 6 s Touring and Mazda6 s Grand Touring.
