A former Allegheny County forensic and neuropathologist testified today that "global" injuries killed an infant six years ago when an uncertified midwife performed a difficult breech-birth delivery of a Bloomfield baby in a home.
Dr. Bennett Omalu testified in the second day of the homicide trial of Judith A. Wilson, 53, of Portersville, who is charged with involuntary manslaughter, endangering the welfare of a child and practicing without a certificate.
Ms. Wilson is accused of having caused fatal internal bleeding of the adrenal gland of Isaac Daley who was born -- feet first -- Nov. 19, 2002, at home with his parents, Jonathan and Joy Daley.
He died two days later in Children's Hospital of what Dr. Omalu determined was, "breech vaginal delivery by a midwife at home. Period.
"Whoever inflicted those injuries is responsible," added Dr. Omalu, who worked for the county coroner at the time of Isaac's death.
During the doctor's testimony, he illustrated autopsy photographs on a TV screen pointing to the fatal internal injuries as well as microscopic slides blown up to show irreversible damage to brain cells.
The slides also pointed to evidence that, contrary to paramedic reports, Isaac was born alive, and he was able to breathe, however sporadically, on his own until his death.
Medics reported the baby was limp and not breathing before he was resuscitated.
Dr. Omalu testified that Ms. Wilson immediately should have ceased the delivery and called 911 when she determined the baby was in breech position.
The trial has been continued to Oct. 29.
The prosecution still is considering whether any more witnesses or evidence will be presented before resting the case.
