Pirates' Moss advised to have knee surgery
Tuesday, September 23, 2008

MILWAUKEE -- Pirates outfielder Brandon Moss has been advised to have surgery on his left knee to address a lack of cartilage that causes friction and "a divot," to use Moss' term.

He has complained of no pain and said, even this afternoon at Miller Park, "I feel 100 percent."

But a routine end-of-season examination by team physician, Dr. Patrick DeMeo, uncovered the issue through an MRI, and the Pirates decided to shut him down. They informed him of that last night.

Moss will visit Dr. Richard Steadman, a noted knee specialist, in Vail, Colo., at some point in the next couple of days. Dr. Steadman will merely check Moss' knee, even though Dr. DeMeo advised surgery.

"I'll take into account what they say," Moss said. "But I know my body, and I know I feel fine."

If Moss were to have the surgery in question, he would miss 4-6 months.
