Targeted man slain in N. Point Breeze shooting
Tuesday, September 23, 2008

The intended victim of a shooting last April in which a 12-year-old boy in Wilkinsburg was killed was shot dead last night in North Point Breeze.

Korey Johnson, 20, was killed at the Sunoco North Point Breeze gas station by a man who walked up to his vehicle and opened fire.

The shooting took place at Penn and Brushton avenues around 10:40 p.m.

Pittsburgh police said the gunman then ran toward East End Avenue where Port Authority officers who were nearby at the time pursued him for a short distance before losing sight of him.

Police said several rounds were fired through the driver's side window of the large SUV after a passenger had gone into the convenience store and Mr. Johnson waited in the vehicle.

Mr. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

City police Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki said it's too early to identify a motive.

Mr. Johnson had been the target of the April 18 shooting in which 12-year-old Kholen Germany was caught in the crossfire.

The boy was shot as he tried to take cover from the gunfire by running into a clothing store on Wood Street in Wilkinsburg.

At the same time, Mr. Johnson and his brother, Kevin Johnson, 23, also had fled into the store as they ran from the suspected gunman, Donald "Tank" Wilson, 19, who had been firing a pistol from across the street.

Kevin Johnson told police that he fired one shot at Mr. Wilson. Mr. Johnson's shot is believed to have struck no one.

He later was charged with illegal possession of a firearm.

At a preliminary hearing last May 24 where Mr. Wilson was charged with killing Kholen, he was ordered held for trial on charges of homicide, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, involuntary manslaughter and carrying a firearm without a license.

In last night's shooting, the suspect is described as a black male standing about 5-feet 9-inches tall and weighing about 165 pounds. He wore a black hooded sweatshirt and dark clothing.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Pittsburgh police homicide squad at 412-323-7161.
