Tuesday, September 23, 2008

An Army private who police said fled to Texas after he fatally stabbed a Ligonier man was to be arraigned by today in Pennsylvania.

Anthony B. Mowry, 18, waived extradition yesterday in Bell County District Court in Texas and was being escorted back to the region by two detectives from the Westmoreland County district attorney's office.

Police charged Mr. Mowry, of Latrobe, with killing William McMichael "Mike" Jones, 75, last week and then setting his apartment on fire.

Authorities said Mr. Mowry beat and stabbed Mr. Jones late last Tuesday or early Wednesday after offering to have sex with him.

Mr. Jones was the great-grandson of one of the founding partners of Jones & Laughlin Steel Co. and a former media consultant. He resigned in 1988 as president of the Tribune-Review Publishing Co.
