The Pennsylvania Commission for Women and the Highmark Foundation this afternoon unveiled a Women's Wellness Guide kiosk at the Allegheny County Jail, which they said will be a critical health information resource for women who tend to be under-served by health agencies.
The first of its kind in Pennsylvania, the kiosk is an ATM-sized touch-screen portal, which will provide women with answers on a wide range of health topics from heart disease to obesity issues. It will also provide information on health insurance options.
The kiosk will be in the jail waiting room.
The kiosk, which will provide women's health information in English and Spanish, is one of 14 such databases that will be installed in various locations like grocery stores, county assistance offices, jails and health care facilities in Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Erie. Funded by the Higmark Foundation and the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare, the project cost about $290,000, said Anne Bale of the Pennsylvania Commission for Women.
