Yankee Stadium plays host to its final event tonight when the New York Yankees face the Baltimore Orioles at 8:05 p.m. on ESPN. One (too-short) list of top moments at the 85-year-old architectural icon of American sports:

Baseball category

5. Babe Ruth hits his 60th home run of the 1927 season on Sept. 30, establishing one of the iconic numbers in sports history and one that would stand for 34 years.

4. Chris Chambliss slams a dramatic walk-off homer Oct. 14, 1976, vs. Kansas City to clinch the Yankees' first pennant in 12 years.

3. Reggie Jackson slams three homers from three pitchers in Game 6 of the World Series on Oct. 18, 1977, to clinch the team's first title in 15 years.

2. Roger Maris hits home run No. 61 on Oct. 1, 1961, to break Babe Ruth's then-major league record.

1. Don Larsen pitches the only perfect game in World Series history on Oct. 8, 1956.

5. Pope Paul VI, the first pontiff to visit the United States, holds mass before 80,000 on Oct. 4, 1965.

4. Joe Louis destroys Max Schmeling in the first round of their June 22, 1938, heavyweight title rematch, slamming Adolf Hitler's theories of racial supremacy.

3. The Baltimore Colts beat the New York Giants in overtime Dec. 28, 1958, for the NFL championship, dubbed "The greatest game ever played."

2. President Bush tosses out the first pitch of Game 3 of the World Series on Oct. 30, 2001, not long after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

1. Suffering from a disease that will eventually bear his name, Lou Gehrig says farewell to baseball July 4, 1939, proclaiming himself "the luckiest man on the face of the earth." He would die two years later.
