WPIAL CLASS AAA: New Castle tops Hopewell for its first win of season

Mike Bongivengo rushed for 160 yards and threw for 126 yards to lead New Castle to a 25-7 upset of Hopewell in the Parkway Conference.

It was the Red Hurricanes' (1-3, 1-1) first win of the season and the Vikings' (3-1, 1-1) first loss.

Bongivengo completed 7 of 14 passes, including scoring passes of 60 yards to Brandon Burley and 9 yards to Ta'shan Jones. He also scored on a one-yard sneak.

Hopewell's only score came on a 15-yard run in the third quarter, which broke a scoreless tie.

Blackhawk 55 New Brighton 7

The No. 2 ranked Cougars (4-0, 2-0) jumped out to a 41-0 lead and rolled to a convincing non-conference win against the Lions (0-4). Jake Delmonico rushed for 70 yards on three carries for the Cougars and scored on runs of 10 and 38 yards.

Highlands 48 Kiski Area 31

Ernest Stewart, Bill Devlin, and Jeff Sinclair combined to rush for 391 yards and six touchdowns on 38 carries to lead the No. 3 Golden Rams (4-0) to a non-conference victory against the winless Cavaliers (0-4). Stewart rushed for 170 yards, Devlin had 111 and Sinclair had 110. All three rushed for two touchdowns. Stewart also scored on a 35-yard interception return.

Montour 24 Moon 14

The No. 4 Spartans (3-1, 1-0) held off the winless Tigers (0-4, 0-1) in the Parkway Conference.

West Allegheny 17 Ambridge 7

The No. 5 Indians (4-0, 2-0) remained unbeaten, while the homestanding Bridgers (0-4, 0-2) remained winless in this Parkway Conference game. Ricky Moore scored twice for West Allegheny on runs of 1 and 12 yards. Ambridge's Zach Nichi completed 14 of 24 passes for 232 yards.

Trinity 28 Elizabeth Forward 17

Andrew Steratore threw touchdown passes of 7 and 17 yards to lead the visiting Hillers (2-2, 1-1) to a Big Seven Conference win against the Warriors (3-1, 1-1). Dan Miller rushed for 132 yards on 23 carries and scored on a pair of one-yard runs for Trinity.

Chartiers Valley 38 West Mifflin 0

The Colts (3-1, 2-0) recorded their second straight shutout with this Big Seven Conference win against the Titans (1-3, 0-2). Jim Riley led the Colts with 265 yards on 17 rushing attempts and scored on runs of 5 and 4 yards. Chartiers Valley had 483 yards in total offense.

Uniontown 42 Albert Gallatin 6

Doug Sanner threw touchdown passes of 4 yards to Jason Guthrie and 66 yards to James Pratt to lead the Red Raiders (3-1, 2-0) to a convincing Keystone Conference win against the Colonials (1-3, 0-2). Sanner completed 8 of 22 passes for 136 yards and ran four yards for another score.

Yough 27 Derry 7

Bob Bridge rushed for 265 yards on only eight carries and scored on runs of 87 and 95 yards, as Yough (2-2, 2-0) remained unbeaten in the Keystone Conference with a victory against the Trojans (1-3, 0-2). Ben Hoffer added a 50-yard touchdown run for the Cougars.

Laurel Highlands 56 Southmoreland 0

The Mustangs (1-3, 1-1) scored 42 points in the first half en route to their first win of the season. The Scotties (0-4, 0-2) have given up 198 points in four games. Tim Bradley rushed for 129 yards on 16 carries and scored on runs of 5 and 12 yards for the Mustangs.

Greensburg Salem 42 Belle Vernon 10

Steve Fagert threw for three touchdowns passes and ran for two more, as the Golden Lions (2-2) scored 35 unanswered points to erase a 10-7 deficit in a non-conference win against the visiting Leopards (2-2). Fagert threw for 105 yards and ran for 104.

Mars 35 Fox Chapel 14

Shane Kaclik rushed for 205 yards on 29 carries and scored on a 1-yard run to lead the Planets (3-1) to a non-conference win against the Foxes (2-2). Kaclik, who now has 550 yards for the season, also caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from John Brake. Brake also scored on a pair of 1-yard sneaks.

Indiana 41 Peters Township 28

Ben Fiscus rushed for 156 yards on 18 carries and scored on runs of 10, 2, and 36 yards, as the Little Indians (4-0) remained undefeated with a non-conference victory against the Indians (1-3).
