Tuesday, September 16, 2008

A Fayette County man was sentenced yesterday to seven to 14 years in prison for a drunken driving accident that resulted in the death of a Butler County elementary school teacher on Interstate 79 North.

Matthew Crowson, 26, of Brownsville, pleaded guilty in June to vehicular homicide, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter, accidents involving death or injury, driving under the influence, reckless driving and several related charges while driving north on I-79 in Marshall on July 4, 2007.

His vehicle struck a car driven by Renee Parkinson, 26, of Callery, a grade school music teacher.

State police said Mr. Crowson's blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit when his car, going more than 100 mph, hit Ms. Parkinson's from behind, forcing her off the road and ejecting her from the car just south of the Warrendale exit. Mr. Crowson suffered minor injuries and tried to drive from the scene while other motorists stopped to try to assist Ms. Parkinson.

In addition to his prison sentence, Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Edward J. Borkowski sentenced the defendant to two years of probation.
