WPIAL Class AAAA Roundup: Gateway routs Latrobe

Gateway, the state's top-ranked team, methodically took apart Latrobe (1-2, 0-1) in the Foothills Conference opener for both teams last night at Latrobe as the Gators (3-0) prevailed, 42-0.

Ohio State recruit Dorian Bell touched the ball four times and scored three touchdowns on runs of 14, 90 and 14 yards to finish with 126 yards rushing.

Teammate Corey Brown, another Buckeyes recruit, scored on a 10-yard reception from Robert Kalkstein.

Brian Williams added a pair of touchdowns on one-yard runs. Gateway outgained Latrobe, 378-88.

Gateway has outscored its opponents, 143-23 this season.

OTHER GAMES

Seneca Valley 42, Baldwin 7

Maryland quarterback recruit C.J. Brown passed for 266 yards and rushed for 87 to lead the Raiders (2-1) to a rout of host Baldwin (0-3) in a non-conference game. Brown threw four touchdown passes and completed 13 of 16 attempts. He also scored on a 1-yard run. Seneca Valley outgained the Highlanders in total yards, 372-13.

Erie McDowell 49, Norwin 13

A.J. Fenton's three-touchdown, 216-yard rushing performance paced the host Trojans (2-1. 1-0) to an easy win over the Knights (1-2, 0-1) in a Foothills Conference opener. Fenton scored on runs of 17, 4 and 1 yards. He also threw touchdown passes covering 47 and 46 yards. McDowell led 35-7 at halftime. Alex Dennison led Norwin with 144 yards passing. Dennison also scored on a 3-yard run. Norwin was outrushed 382-79 and outgained overall, 471-223.

McKeesport 67, Connellsville 7

The Tigers (2-1, 1-0) led 48-0 after the first quarter during their Foothills Conference opener against the visiting Falcons (0-3, 0-1). Connellsville has been outscored 168-14 this season. McKeesport rolled up 399 yards rushing led by Sam Gooden with 125 yards on just two carries and Paris Purdue with 119 on three attempts. Gooden scored on runs of 66 and 59 yards. Purdue found paydirt on runs of 42 and 37 yards. McKeesport did not attempt a single pass and led 55-0 at halftime.

Canon-McMillan 10 Woodland Hills 0

The host Big Macs (2-1) blanked the Wolverines (1-2) in a non-conference contest by holding Woodland Hills to 99 yards total offense and three first downs. Mike Hull led Canon-McMillan with 138 yards rushing on 31 carries. Justin Baker scored the game's only touchdown with a 41-yard interception return with 2:04 left in the game. Woodland Hills finished with four turnovers to one for Canon-McMillan.

Shaler 21, Hampton 6

The visiting Titans (3-0) claimed a non-conference victory against Class AAA Hampton (0-3). Hampton is coached by former Shaler head coach Jacque DeMatteo. Neil Gordon, in his first season at Shaler, has a spotless record thus far after 156 career wins in the 22 previous seasons at Penn Hills. Jesse Della Valle led Shaler with 121 yards rushing on 14 carries. Anthony Waskiewicz scored on touchdown runs of 27 and 5 yards for Shaler.

Central Catholic 21, Mt. Lebanon 0

Dom Maggio scored on runs of 20, 10 and 8 yards to pace the WPIAL No. 3 Vikings (2-1) to a non-conference win at Mt. Lebanon (0-3). The Vikings led 14-0 after the first quarter. Central Catholic had 183 yards total offense, all on the ground. Mt. Lebanon has only scored six points this year. The Blue Devils were held to 132 yards offense with 105 yards coming through the air.

Penn-Trafford 35, Hempfield 7

Mike Brown completed 6 of 7 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns in leading the host Warriors (1-2, 1-0) to a comfortable victory over the Spartans (1-2, 0-1) in the Foothills Conference. Brown also scored on a 27-yard run to open the scoring in the first quarer. Penn-Trafford led 14-7 at halftime before a 48-yard touchdown reception by Bob Westerlund and a 16-yard scoring pass to Matt Hyland broke the game open in the third quarter.

Fox Chapel 24, Franklin Regional 19

Fox Chapel (2-1) held on to victory after gaining a 17-0 lead at home against Class AAA Franklin Regional (2-1). Montay Green led Fox Chapel with 128 yards rushing. The Foxes held a 253-235 edge in offensive yardage, including 184-146 on the ground. Jessie Samek led Franklin Regional with 133 yards rushing on 21 carries. Samek scored on touchdown runs of 21 and 5 yards.
