One of five student-athletes wounded in a September 2006 shooting at Duquesne University is suing the school, his attorneys said in a statement.
Sam Ashaolu was shot twice in the head when two men opened fire on him and four other basketball players at a campus dance.
Mr. Ashaolu's lawsuit alleges negligence on the part of several individuals and Duquesne University, the statement says. Attorneys William F. Goodrich and Joshua P. Geist did not return calls for further comment yesterday.
"Throughout the last two years, Sam has continued to attempt to complete his college education while sitting and watching his teammates perform on the basketball court," the statement says. "It has been a traumatic event for Sam and his family. . . . It was his family's belief that Sam would be safe at Duquesne University. And the fact is, he wasn't."
Stuard Baldonado, another player who was shot, has also filed a civil lawsuit against Duquesne, charging the school did not provide enough security to ensure his and other students' safety.
