Body recovered from river near Homestead
Monday, September 08, 2008

Police from Pittsburgh and Homestead are investigating the discovery just before noon of a man's body floating in the Monongahela River.

The Allegheny County medical examiner was summoned around noon after Pittsburgh's River Rescue squad retrieved the body.

The body was found floating on the Homestead side of the river near the Homestead Grays Bridge.

Joe Stowers, an employee of Pittsburgh Rigging, said he and his crew had been unaware of the body until police, on the deck of the bridge, directed him to it.

Mr. Stowers, 37, of Hopewell, said he had been in a small boat as part of the crew inspecting the bridge.

He said he held onto the remains until River Rescue personnel arrived to take the body to shore.

"I don't know how to take it, yet. I'm still shaking a little bit," Mr. Stowers said.

The body is that of a white man who appears to have been more than 40-years old, Mr. Stowers said.

Authorities say crews searched the river unsuccessfully yesterday after a report that someone jumped from the bridge.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
