If you've been wondering how much an old family heirloom or collector's item might fetch on the market, next weekend would be a good time to get it out of storage.
The Center in the Woods' first Antique and Appraisal Weekend will feature Harry Rinker, who was host of "The Collector Inspector," a weekly show on Home and Garden Television from October 2002 to December 2004 that was devoted to seeking out antiques and collectibles in private homes.
Antiques and collectibles will be appraised from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Sunday.
The fee is $8 for each item or $20 for three items.
"If the objects are too heavy or bulky to bring in, attendees can submit photographs of the items taken from a number of vantage points," Mr. Rinker said.
So, what's hot in antiques?
"People don't know that some of the hottest stuff on the market right now is from the '70s and '80s," he said. "Things like Transformers, Cabbage Patch dolls, even some of that era's pop music is in great demand. To me, the best thing about the Grateful Dead is that they're dead. However, their music is currently very collectible."
The weekend will open with a Hidden Treasures Reception from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday with Mr. Rinker.
Mr. Rinker will conduct six workshops on antiques starting at 9:30 a.m. with a fee of $5 for each session.
Admission to Saturday's and next Sunday's events is $2. There also will be a raffle for an in-home appraisal by Mr. Rinker.
At 2 p.m. next Sunday, the center will hold a Grand Finale Auction of "a mishmash of things donated by businesses and individuals."
The Center in the Woods is on Route 88 across from the University Park of California University of Pennsylvania.
