Wpial Class AAAA Roundup: No. 1 Gateway rolls past Baldwin

Gateway, ranked No. 1 in WPIAL Class AAAA by the Post-Gazette, jumped out to a 29-point halftime lead and cruised to a 56-6 win against visiting Baldwin last night in a non-conference game at Gateway Stadium.

Rob Kalkstein completed 16 of 22 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns. Kalkstein had scoring passes of 14, 15 and 5 yards, all to Corey Brown, in helping Gateway improve to 2-0.

Brown led all receivers with eight receptions for 64 yards.

Gateway, which has outscored its opponents 101-23 to start the season, outgained Baldwin in total yards, 425-69, and had a 22-5 advantage in first downs.

The Highlanders (0-2) grabbed a 6-0 lead on Jordan Joyce's 1-yard run before Gateway took the lead for good on the first touchdown pass from Kalkstein to Brown.

Dorian Bell had two touchdowns in the second quarter for Gateway on runs of 36 and 48 yards.

The Gators added three rushing touchdowns in the second half from Brian Williams (1 yard), Dayonne Nunley (20) and Shawn Brisker (22).

OTHER GAMES

North Hills 7 Penn-Trafford 0

Michael Sivak scored on a 3-yard run in the first quarter, and No. 5 North Hills held on for a close victory against visiting Penn-Trafford. Sivak rushed for 124 yards on 18 carries, and Justin Heinauer completed 8 of 18 passes for 111 yards and an interception to help the Indians improve to 2-0. Penn-Trafford (0-2) had an 11-10 advantage in first downs, but was hurt by three interceptions.

Fox Chapel 28 Latrobe 24

Colin Hartford caught a 14-yard pass from Jullian Salerno with 49 seconds remaining to lift visiting Fox Chapel to a victory over Latrobe. The Foxes (1-1) scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a 5-yard run from Montay Green, to rally for the victory. Green rushed for 112 yards on 18 carries and also had a 35-yard touchdown run. Lamonte White had Fox Chapel's other touchdown with a 66-yard run. Salerno completed 13 of 20 passes for 167 yards. Eric Shaffer completed 14 of 25 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown and also had a 13-yard scoring run for Latrobe (1-1).

Woodland Hills 56 Connellsville 0

John Yezovich threw two touchdown passes in leading host Woodland Hills (1-1) to a rout of Connellsville. Yezovich connected with Ronrei Lloyd for a 3-yard touchdown pass and Mike Lee for a 44-yard score. Lafayette Pitts returned a punt 81 yards for a touchdown and also scored on a 13-yard run. Charles Williams scored the final touchdown when he returned a blocked punt 15 yards. The Wolverines, who scored all of their points before halftime, outgained Connellsville, 300-25, and had a 14-2 advantage in first downs. Connellsville (0-2) has been outscored, 101-7, this season.

McKeesport 55 Plum 0

Host McKeesport led, 28-0, after the first quarter and went on to an easy victory against Plum. The Tigers (1-1) rushed for 453 yards and held Plum to 103 total yards. Parris Perdue had touchdown runs of 24 and 1 yards and Darien Robinson also scored twice on runs of 16 and 10 yards. Nico Price, Evander Wright and Ty-Meer Brown also had rushing touchdowns for the Tigers, and JaWan Bryant ended the scoring with a 74-yard kickoff return. Plum (0-2), which has been outscored, 83-7, this season, lost four fumbles.

North Allegheny 37 Mt. Lebanon 0

Alex Papson rushed for 193 yards on 14 carries, including a 91-yard touchdown run, and host North Allegheny (1-1) picked up its first victory of the season by shutting out Mt. Lebanon. Mike Locke threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Brian Austin and also scored on runs of 1 and 10 yards for the Blue Devils. Austin scored North Allegheny's other touchdown with a 89-yard kickoff return and Kurt Devlin kicked a 26-yard field goal. Andrew Cappucci completed 10 of 17 passes for 103 yards and threw an interception for Mt. Lebanon (0-2). Mike Martin had five receptions for 43 yards.

Upper St. Clair 23 Pine-Richland 14

Visiting Upper St. Clair limited Pine-Richland to minus-7 yards of offense in the second half and pulled away to a victory. Reed Apfelbaum's 1-yard score in the third quarter broke a 14-14 tie and helped Upper St. Clair improve to 2-0 this season. Apfelbaum led all rushers with 76 yards on 13 carries. Alex Park threw touchdown passes of 47 and 74 yards to Spencer Scott. Park finished with 206 yards passing, and Scott caught five passes for 175 yards. Upper St. Clair tacked on a safety in the fourth quarter. Ian Hennessy led Pine-Richland (0-2) with two scores, on a 16-yard run and a 5-yard pass from Eric Kordenbrock. Hennessy rushed for 61 yards on 17 carries and also caught four passes for 73 yards. Kordenbrock went 10 of 22 for 101 yards.

Peters Township 17 Kiski Area 13

Brady Ashe rushed for 101 yards and 23 carries and scored on a 2-yard run in leading host Peters Township (1-1) past Kiski Area (0-2). Austin Hancock had a 3-yard scoring run and Jack Hareza kicked a 24-yard field goal for the Indians. For Kiski Area, Bill Emerick passed for 192 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Jackson, and also scored on a 2-yard run. Jackson caught five passes for 113 yards, and Josh Taylor rushed for 95 yards on 17 carries for Kiski Area, which lost despite outgaining Peters Township, 283-186.

Butler 26 Norwin 20

Visiting Butler improved to 2-0 this season with a victory against Norwin, which fell to 1-1.
