PhilYeboahKodie: What is the latest on the Tuesday night raid at the Nittany Apartments?
Ron Musselman: Penn State officials are looking into the incident and something could shake out as early as today. University police seized marijuana during their raid. The search warrant listed tight end Andrew Quarless and cornerback A.J. Wallace as residents and among those present during the search. Defensive end Maurice Evans and sophomore defensive tackle Abe Koroma also are registered as residents of the apartment, but the warrant did not say they were present. We now learn that none of the four practiced yesterday. None of this sounds good, given the recent "Outside the Lines" report on ESPN.
PennSt8r: What do you think Pat Devlin will do now that Daryll Clark recently was awarded another year of eligibility?
Ron Musselman: I don't think Devlin will be able to make the on whether he will transfer until after we see what shakes out in the next few weeks. He played some on Saturday against Coastal Carolina. It's possible if Clark starts and doesn't play well, Devlin would get the call. I don't think the Penn State coaches would have any problem making that switch.
PhilYeboahKodie: Has Nelson or the rest of the Penn State Spin Doctors release antything as far as suspensions, etc?
Ron Musselman: Nothing yet. Stay tuned. There could be more coming news today.
PhilYeboahKodie: Ron, Please handicap this weekend's match-up. It seems that Oregon State wants to get in a track meet ...
Ron Musselman: I think Oregon State is a solid team from a good conference, the Pac-10. But I have a hard time believing that the Beavers can beat Penn State at Beaver Stadium, especially after losing their opener at Stanford. Now, there is bad weather forecast for Saturday, so that could change everything.
PhilYeboahKodie: Do you expect the backfield rotation to continue or will they focus more on Royster most of the game?
Ron Musselman: I think the backfield rotation will continue, but I do expect Evan Royster and Stephfon Green to get most of the snaps. Royster had three touchdowns last week on just eight carries and Green had a team-high 89 yards and two scores. Royster and Green are going to be the two workhorses this year, so they better get used to it. Royster should get at least 15 or so carries Saturday.
rathskeller: I realize that last weekend's game was against the JV, but it seemed like a perfect tuneup game. My question is how do Penn State & Oregon State matchup?
Ron Musselman: Even the fourth-stringers at Oregon State are better than any player that Coastal Carolina had last week. It's hard to get all giddy about anyone's performance in that game. Oregon State lost a lot of key players from its defense, but it has a really good offense, just like Penn State. It should be a pretty entertaining game, as long as it doesn't rain all day. If it does, you would have to believe the Nittany Lions would grind down the Beavers with their running game.
rathskeller: While I don't think anyone should be shocked that -- gasp! -- college students smoke marijuana sometimes, this couldn't come at a worse time for the team, school, staff, etc. That said, if these guys are suspended for this week, or even the season, who plays in their place?
Ron Musselman: I think we need to wait and see what shakes out before we can even worry about that.
PhilYeboahKodie: Rate how the defensive line handled their first scrimmage this past weekend. It seems that the rotation plan could work well.
Ron Musselman: The rotation did seem to work well. Maurice Evans and Josh Gaines started at the end spots and Ollie Ogbu and Abe Koroma at tackle. Gaines, of course, moved inside and played tackle for a few plays, allowing Aaron Maybin to fill the role of speed rusher from the end. Jerome Hayes also played well, as did Jared Odrick and a number of youngsters. Of course, it's had not to play well against a poor football team, which Coastal Carolina was, no doubt.
PSU4EVER: What's your handicap of Oregon State? What do you know about them. I wasn't impressed with them against Stanford.
Ron Musselman: No, I think the quarterback (Lyle Moevao) is really solid. I mean he threw for more than 400 yards and three touchdowns, but his two interceptions were devastating. The Beavers also have two solid receivers in Sammie Stroughter, who had 12 catches for 157 yards and two touchdowns, and Shane Morales, who added 13 catches for 151 yards and a score. Oregon State does have some talent. The question is, will it be enough in Happy Valley?
chaffie_fields: This is a random question, but playing Oregon State is kind of random too for a non-con game -- how did they end up on the sked?
Ron Musselman: Penn State originally was supposed to play Arkansas State, but that changed in December when Oregon State was tabbed as the replacement. The Beavers are the only Pac-10 team Penn State has never faced. Maybe it's good thing Oregon State did replace Arkansas State. which upset Texas A&M, 18-14, Saturday night. A&M, you'll recall lost to Penn State in the Alamo Bowl in December.
PhilYeboahKodie: Ron, is this game a home at home with Oregon State, or just a one-off game?
Ron Musselman: It's just one-shot deal.
PhilYeboahKodie: How much will weather play a factor this weekend on the play calling?
Ron Musselman: If it's raining as hard as they say it might be at Beaver Stadium, it could make for some tough sledding. But at least they are not playing at Heinz Field, so the grass shouldn't get all chewed up.
PhilYeboahKodie: Ron, with so many players being shuttled in and out Saturday, how many "True" freshmen saw playing time?
Ron Musselman: Four true freshmen played -- Brandon Beachum, Jack Crawford, DeOn?tae Pannell and Michael Mauti.
PhilYeboahKodie: Is this trip for Oregon State one of the toughest logistically for any team in major college football this year? Corvallis and State College seem to be both rather remote locations.
Ron Musselman: State College and Corvallis are both remote locations. Oregon State is the only BCS conference team in the country to open the year with two road games. The Beavers are 4-0 record in bowl games during Mike Riley's two stints with the program, but are 0-6 on the road against BCS teams. That doesn't bode too well for Saturday, although anything can happen.
PhilYeboahKodie: Is Joe getting more liberal in playing true freshmen now that so many underclassmen declare (mistakenly) for pro ball?
Ron Musselman: I think he had to play more true freshmen because of depth issues. And quite frankly, some of them are just too good to keep off the field.
PhilYeboahKodie: Ron, any chance of doing a PSU blog, ala Dejan with the Bucs? His is the gold standard.
Ron Musselman: Well, we are doing one where we contribute to a Penn State, West Virginia and Pitt blog. I can only do what I am told.
PhilYeboahKodie: In Saturday's game, the one part of Devlin's game that was very refreshing was the touch he puts on his passes. It has been a long time since a PSU passer could actually lay a ball in on a receiver rather than just firing it to the receiver.
Ron Musselman: Devlin does have a nice touch on his passes, but let's remember, it was against second and third-stringers who weren't pressuring him or pressuring the receivers. I think it would be a lot more reassuring if he did it against Oregon State, Wisconsin or Ohio State.
Daryll_Clarks_Army: Biggest glaring weakness on the team that could get exposed this weekend?
Ron Musselman: I still think Penn State's kicking game is shaky, especially Kevin Kelly. His leg is not very strong on field goals and that could ultimately doom the Lions in a close game, especially if he is attempting the game-winner from anywhere outside 40 yards. I think the linebacker play also needs to pick up a little. it was hard to evaluate how Josh Hull, Bani Gbadyu and Tyrell Sales played.
