NFL Notebook: Ravens move Boller to injured reserve list
Thursday, September 04, 2008

Quarterback Kyle Boller was placed on injured reserve by the Baltimore Ravens yesterday, ending his season and perhaps his stay with the team.

Boller's shoulder was hurt in Baltimore's second preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings and he has not played since.

Coach John Harbaugh described the injury as either a torn labrum or other damage that would render Boller unable to play this year.

Boller was to enter his sixth NFL season, all with Baltimore. He is in the final year of his contract. Boller entered the preseason competing for the starting job with Troy Smith and top draft pick Joe Flacco, who ultimately won the job because of Boller's injury and Smith's lengthy battle with infected tonsils.

Flacco played at Delaware and had a stint at Pitt.

Panthers

Backup quarterback Matt Moore injured his left leg in the final preseason game against the Steelers. He had two X-rays and an MRI that revealed no broken bones.

Cleared to practice yesterday, Moore attempted to push off on his leg and felt something pop. X-rays revealed a broken fibula, and Moore is out indefinitely.

Moore went 2-1 as a starter for the Panthers last season as an undrafted rookie. But he struggled in the preseason, not leading the Panthers to a touchdown, and was expected to drop to third-string behind starter Jake Delhomme and backup Josh McCown.

Patriots

Coach Bill Belichick expects quarterback Tom Brady to be ready Sunday for the season opener against Kansas City after the NFL's reigning MVP missed all four exhibition games.

"He's practicing this week and I expect he'll be ready to go," Belichick said in a conference call with Kansas City reporters.

Asked if that meant that Brady, who has had an injured right foot, would play, Belichick said: "He's been practicing all week. I expect him to be out there today and I expect him to be out there the rest of the week."

Raiders

With starting receiver Javon Walker slowed by a slightly pulled hamstring this week, newly acquired Ashley Lelie better be a quick study of his new offense because he might be counted on heavily in the season opener against Denver. Lelie participated in his first practice with the Raiders yesterday, but had already begun the crash course in learning the Oakland system. Lelie had a bit of a head start once he got the playbook, having spent a year with Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Knapp in Atlanta.

Jaguars

Wide receiver Reggie Williams missed practice because of a hamstring injury and might not be ready for the season opener. Williams sat out much of training camp and part of the preseason after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

Bengals

Cincinnati put fullback Jeremi Johnson (knee) on injured reserve and signed free-agent fullback Reagan Maui'a.
