Memorial Sept. 22 for CMU's Randy Pausch
Wednesday, September 03, 2008

Carnegie Mellon University has scheduled a campus memorial ceremony for former professor Randy Pausch for Sept. 22, but expects so many will want to attend that it already has made arrangements to broadcast the service live on ABC's Web site.

The invitation-only memorial service for Dr. Pausch, who died of pancreatic cancer July 25 at age 47, will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the school's largest space, Rangos Hall.

"We wish we could accommodate everybody who would like to attend this event," Carnegie Mellon president Jared Cohon said in a news release, "but the size of even the biggest room on campus, not to mention our limited parking, makes that impossible. By making live streaming video available, we hope that everyone can join us as a virtual community."

The service will be shown on abcnews.go.com/, and Dr. Cohon said the university is urging its various schools and colleges to host their own gatherings of faculty, staff and students to watch the ceremony that way.

Dr. Pausch was a popular computer science professor who pioneered the marriage of computers and entertainment and helped create Alice, a groundbreaking way of teaching programming by using animated characters.

But what made him world famous was a final lecture he delivered at the school in September, after doctors had told him he had just months to live, in which he talked about treasuring friends and family, overcoming obstacles and pursuing personal dreams.

His lecture was viewed on the Web by more than 10 million people, he appeared on several national television programs, and he co-wrote a book, "The Last Lecture," that was based on the speech and has become an international best-seller.

Carnegie Mellon officials said details of the memorial program will be released later. Dr. Pausch's widow, Jai, is expected to attend but is not scheduled to speak at the event.
