North Allegheny had a 14-game, regular-season winning streak snapped against host Altoona, 28-21, last night at Mansion Park Stadium in a game pitting the WPIAL against District 6.
The Tigers lost despite outgaining the Mountian Lions, 227 yards to 129, while also holding a 15-8 edge in first downs.
The difference in the contest was a 23-yard interception return for a touchdown by Altoona's Tyler Wentz with 1:42 left. The score was deadlocked 21-21 at halftime. The Tigers wiped out a 14-0 deficit and knotted the score when Grant Huckstein scored on a 3-yard run with 1:56 left before halftime.
Mike Locke led North Allegheny by completing 12 of 27 pass attempts for 138 yards. Locke threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Brian Austin midway in the second quarter. The other Tigers touchdown was scored by Austin on a 98-yard kickoff return with 2:19 left in the first quarter.
North Allegheny is ranked No. 4 in WPIAL Class AAAA by the Post-Gazette. The previous time the Tigers lost a regular-season game was Sept. 22, 2006 at home against Upper St. Clair.
Bethel Park 47 Kiski Area 20
The host Black Hawks scored early and often in a non-conference rout of Kiski Area. Lyle Marsh led Bethel Park with touchdown runs of 1, 10 and 1 yards. Bre' Ford led Bethel Park with 128 yards rushing on nine carries. Bethel Park, ranked fifth in the WPIAL, had a whopping 26-5 edge in first downs, outgaining the Cavaliers, 505-226. Kiski Area's Jeff Jackson scored on a 90-yard kickoff return and an 87-yard reception from Bill Emerrick.
Shaler 19 Baldwin 6
Tyler Bills competed 14 of 20 pass attempts for 182 yards to lead the host Titans to a non-league victory against the Highlanders. Bills threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jesse Della Valle, who also scored on a 24-yard run. Shaler's other touchdown came on an 86-yard kickoff return by Dan McGinley. Della Valle accounted for 116 reception yards on six catches.
North Hills 14 Mt. Lebanon 6
Michael Sivak scored two touchdowns and rushed for 94 yards on 18 carries in leading the visiting Indians to a victory at Mt. Lebanon in a non-conference game. North Hills outgained the Blue Devils, 347-296, with a 20-8 advantage in first downs. North Hills converted 7 of 11 third-down situations and ran 58 plays to Mt. Lebanon's 40. North Hills quarterback Justin Heinauer completed 13 of 20 passes for 175 yards.
Butler 28 New Castle 21
Brian Zendesky's 5-yard touchdown reception with 10:19 left in the fourth quarter led the Golden Tornado to a non-league victory at New Castle. Cole Harvey led Butler with 166 yards rushing. Harvey was also the passer who tossed the winning score to Zendesky. Keith Keene led New Castle with two touchdowns, including one on a 63-yard run as he finished with 110 yards on the ground on 11 carries.
Latrobe 35 Derry 13
The visiting Wildcats raced for 28 second-half points en route to an impressive win at Derry in a non-conference game. Eric Shaffer led Latrobe with 163 yards passing while also scoring on runs of 5, 7 and 9 yards. Shaffer also threw a 76-yard touchdown pass to Ryan LaDuke in the first quarter. Brad Burkley rushed for 126 yards on 20 carries for the Wildcats.
Upper St. Clair 28 Penn-Trafford 14
The Panthers claimed a road victory by overcoming a 7-0 first-quarter deficit. Jacob Siwicki led Upper St. Clair with 106 yards rushing on 13 carries. Siwicki scored on touchdown runs of 3 and 9 yards in the first half. Alex Park completed 9 of 11 passes for 105 yards and one touchdown for the Panthers. Upper St. Clair won its 10th consecutive season opener.
Norwin 17 Seneca Valley 14
C.J. Brown threw for 301 yards in a losing cause for the Raiders, who lost at Norwin. Zane Zahorchak kicked a decisive 23-yard field with 3:58 left in the third quarter. Seneca Valley held a 364-263 lead in total yards. Norwin led, 14-0, with 9:44 left in the first half after John Palumbo's 59-yard return of a fumble recovery.
Canon McMillan 32 Trinity 7
The host Big Macs throttled rival Trinity in a non-conference contest as Canon-McMillan scored in every quarter. Jon Pozonsky led the Big Macs with a 27-yard touchdown reception and an 85-yard interception return. Canon-McMillan led, 19-0, at halftime. Mike Hull rushed for 103 yards on 16 carries, scoring one touchdown for the winners.
Hempfield 27 Greensburg Salem 20
The visiting Spartans gained control early with a 13-0 first-quarter lead and withstood a Golden Lions rally of 20 fourth-quarter points. Steve Fagert led Greensburg Salem with 266 yards passing, completing 13 of 18 attempts, but he had two costly interceptions. R.J. Thomas led Hempfield with 146 yards rushing on 20 carries. Thomas scored on runs of 4 and 3 yards. He also hauled in a 63-yard scoring pass from Danie Mania early in the fourth quarter. Greensburg led in total yards 454-268, but turned the ball over five times.
