Open roads -- With few exceptions, contractors have suspended major road work for the Labor Day holiday weekend and, where possible, PennDOT has temporarily lifted restrictions on roads and bridges. For example, all lanes of the Parkway East/I-376 mainline are open in the 3-mile construction zone between the Edgewood-Swissvale and Business Route 22 interchanges.
DUI alert -- More than 300 municipal police departments and state police are cracking down on impaired drivers on this holiday weekend.
Blasting in Westmoreland -- Traffic stopped up to 20 minutes between Irwin and New Stanton interchanges 9 a.m.-noon, Monday through Thursday, and occasionally early Saturday, for excavation in advance of widening the road to three lanes in each direction. No more than one stoppage each day.
I-70, Washington County -- Ten-mile resurfacing project under way between Kammerer Exit and I-79 South Junction. Contractor works 8 p.m.-8 a.m. most days, weather permitting.
I-79, Bridgeville -- New on-ramp from Route 50 to I-79 north is open. Some restrictions will still occur through early October for completion of the $6.1 million project that included a new bridge over Chartiers Creek.
I-279, Ross -- Inbound lanes have been reopened and traffic is no longer shifted to the HOV lanes beyond Perrysville Avenue Interchange. HOV remains closed and will be used for northbound traffic starting in mid-September. Some off-peak restrictions on mainline resume Tuesday.
Parkway West, Banksville -- Lane closures, other restrictions overnight Tuesday through Sept. 15 while work takes place on the overpass at Banksville Interchange. However, traffic still maintained through the area and on ramps.
Liberty Tunnels -- Outbound (southbound) tunnel is closed 10 p.m.-6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday nights through February for $5.3 million in repairs, new portals. Detour via McArdle Roadway to Route 51/Route 19. Inbound tunnel not affected.
Route 19, Marshall -- Single-lane traffic patterns weeknights for repairs on the Pennsylvania Turnpike overpass just south of Cranberry. Late September finish.
Business Route 22, Monroeville/Wilkins -- Traffic reduced to a single lane each direction, 9:30 p.m.-9 a.m. weekdays through late October, for resurfacing between the Parkway East and Route 48, a total of four miles.
Route 22, Westmoreland County -- All four lanes have reopened in the 4.5-mile construction zone between Cozy Inn Cutoff and Route 66 interchange, Delmont, after three years and $43.8 million worth of widening, safety improvements.
Route 28, Etna area -- Yearlong project to improve outbound Route 28 from Etna to the Highland Park Bridge under way. At the 62nd Street Bridge, Route 8 south ramp to Route 28 north is closed but the southbound lanes of the bridge have reopened to traffic from Route 8 south.
Route 837, West Mifflin and Dravosburg -- Alternating, single-lane traffic 8 a.m.-4 p.m. for resurfacing from the railroad tracks near the Mansfield Bridge to north of the Duquesne-McKeesport Bridge. Overnight resurfacing on 2.3 miles from New England Road to McClure Street, Dravosburg.
Boulevard of the Allies, Oakland -- Closed outbound east of the Parkway East entrance for interchange reconstruction. A second lane on Forbes Avenue has reopened. The boulevard inbound ramp to I-579 north closed for bridge-deck repairs but ramp to Liberty Bridge remains open.
Penn Avenue, East Liberty -- Traffic shifted from the eastbound lanes to the newly reconstructed inbound lanes, latest phase of the $3.1 million project covering 1.2 miles of Fifth Avenue/Route 8 and Penn Avenue. Fifth Avenue reduced to single alternating lane, 7 p.m.-6 a.m. weekdays through late September in Point Breeze area for paving, other improvements.
Sixth Street, Downtown -- Closed at the intersection of Penn Avenue until 6:30 a.m. Tuesday for brick and granite repairs.
Stanwix Street, Downtown -- Closed between Fort Duquesne Boulevard and Penn Avenue for light-rail tunneling.
Birmingham Bridge -- One lane maintained in both directions on the southbound side while PennDOT replaces rocker bearings on the northbound side.
Rankin Bridge -- One lane of traffic in each direction while the bridge undergoes a two-year rehabilitation.
Veterans Bridge, I-579 -- Single-lane closures, traffic shifts 8 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays, starting Tuesday, while expansion dams are repaired on the bridge approach ramp from I-279 south.
Quarterly service changes -- Mostly minor changes on light-rail and dozens of bus routes become effective 12:01 a.m. Sunday. New schedules for affected routes posted at www.portauthority.org. Printed timetables now on schedule racks.
