Duquesne Light has installed a generator and restored lighting in the Squirrel Hill Tunnels and electricity to other customers near the tunnels.
The utility announced shortly before 6 p.m. that the power was back on.
A contractor using an auger to do work near Shady Avenue in Squirrel Hill dug into one of Duquesne Light's underground cables earlier in the day, cuting power to the lights in the Squirrel Hill Tunnel.
Duquesne Light spokesman Joseph Vallarian said some homes near Shady Avenue might have lost power briefly around 3 p.m. after workers removed the damaged piece of line, but all service was restored within a few minutes.
Duquesne Light was investigating to determine whether the contractor went through proper procedures before digging.
