A Coraopolis petroleum warehouse is warning that anyone who purchased kerosene from May 1 to Tuesday should not use it, as it might contain gasoline and be potentially explosive.
Pittsburgh Terminals Corp. says anyone who bought the product in Western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia and near the southwestern border of New York should not use it, but instead return it to the retailer for a refund or replacement.
"We just want to be safe and throw a broad net," spokesman John Arnold said last night, adding that the company does not know how many gallons of contaminated kerosene exist or exactly where they are located.
The company issued the recall yesterday after a station in Erie reported a problem with its kerosene, and tests confirmed it was contaminated with gasoline. The problem was traced to a malfunctioning valve and has since been fixed, Mr. Arnold said.
All gas stations, convenience stores and retailers that carry kerosene have been notified not to sell it until tests confirm it is clean, he said.
The company said for more information about how to properly dispose of the kerosene, call 1-717-939-0466 or e-mail KeroseneRecall@ppcTerminals.com.
