Hearing next week for 2 men charged with weapons cache
Tuesday, August 19, 2008

A preliminary hearing is scheduled next week for two men charged over the weekend with illegal possession of a cache of firearms, ammunition, explosives and military and paramilitary uniforms at a Beaver County home.

The hearing for Dean Alan Huzinec of Fire Street in Franklin Township, and his house guest, Dean Timothy Eakin, is set for 11 a.m. Monday in Beaver County Central Court.

Mr. Huzinec, 47, and Mr. Eakin, 43, whose last known address was in Warren, Ohio, were held in the Beaver County Jail pending the hearing.

Mr. Huzinec is charged with carrying a loaded weapon, illegal possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, carrying a firearm without a license, conspiracy, receiving stolen property, risking a catastrophe, possession of prohibited offensive weapons, possession of instruments of crime and possession of illegal drugs and paraphernalia.

Mr. Eakin faces one count of illegal possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.

The federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. attorney's office have joined the investigation.

The U.S. attorney's office will determine whether federal charges will be filed against the two suspects, but no federal charges have been filed in connection with the case, said ATF spokesman John Hageman.

He said his agency seized 15 firearms, including handguns and rifles, from the residence.

The bomb squad spent much of the day Sunday removing the cache from the two-story home of Mr. Huzinec in a quiet residential section of the township near Ellwood City.

Franklin police called for expert assistance after finding the collection of guns, rifles and ammunition, along with surveillance cameras and military and police uniforms, all of which were confiscated. Narcotics and drug paraphernalia also were found, police said.

Franklin Officer Kevin Radford visited Mr. Huzinec's residence Saturday night to follow up on a missing persons report that Mr. Eakin's sister had filed about him. The officer said he spotted a 9 mm gun inside the residence, memorized the serial number, and in checking records found that the gun had been stolen and Mr. Huzinec had a criminal past that made it illegal for him to possess it.

Officer Radford obtained a search warrant, and officers returned to the home to find a .357-caliber Magnum on Mr. Huzinec and two other guns nearby. After a search discovered more firearms, ammunition, black powder, smokeless powder and fireworks, they requested assistance from the bomb squad.

According to the police affidavit, "multiple assault type weapons were found, various handguns, altered firearms and unlawful possession firearms, ammunition for those weapons, homemade incendiary devices and military type incendiary devices."

Also present was video and audio surveillance equipment, which Officer Dean Custozzo said enabled Mr. Huzinec to see people coming and going outside.
