Ex-Penn State tackle headed to Baylor
Friday, August 15, 2008

Defensive tackle Phil Taylor, kicked off Penn State's team two weeks ago due to recurring off-the-field issues, plans to transfer to Baylor.

The Tribune-Herald in Waco, Texas, reported today that Taylor would enroll for the fall semester after watching the Bears practice yesterday.

Under NCAA rules, the 6-4, 335-pound junior will have to sit out the upcoming season, but he will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Taylor will be reunited with former Penn State safeties coach Brian Norwood, Baylor's first-year defensive coordinator. Norwood recruited Taylor out of Gwynn Park High School in Clinton, Md.

Taylor had been barred from Penn State's campus, including team activities, from the end of the spring semester until today. He was sentenced to one year of probation and 100 hours of community service in May as part of a plea deal for his role in a fight in October at the student union building.

Chris Baker, another troubled defensive tackle dismissed from Penn State's team the same day as Taylor, recently enrolled at Hampton, a Division I-AA school. He is eligible to play immediately.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
